Maharashtra is home to many rivers. The soil of Maharashtra has the origin of Krishna, Godavari rivers. Also, Maharashtra is the passage of many important rivers of India including Indrāvati, Purna, Koyna etc. We know that humongous flow of water can be utilized for various purposes. We build dams to use the water of rivers for agriculture, industries or sometimes just to prevent floods in the nearby areas. Dams play a major role in Indian social and economic development. Indian parliament has recently passed Dam Safety Act 2021 to manage the dams in India in an efficient and sustainable manner. The act aims to establish an authority called National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) at central level and state authority at state level for cooperation between the states and the center.

Maharashtra has plenty of dams due to plenty of rivers. Here’s the list of some of the dams of Maharashtra-
Anandwadi Dam
Beginning the list of dams, Anandwadi is a crucial dam for the economy of Maharashtra. Anandwadi dam lies in the district called Osmanabad. The Anandwadi dam is built on the river named as ‘Local Nallah’. The position of this river in the basin of river Krishna. The main purpose of making Anandwadi dam was irrigation. Anandwadi dam was completed in 2002.
Ancharwadi Dam-1
Ancharwadi dam is constructed in two parts – Ancharwadi-1 and Ancharwadi-2. Both these dams are located in the Buldana district of Maharashtra. Godavari river basin engulfs the Local Nalla river in it. Both of the dams were erected for the purpose of irrigation. Ancharwadi dam-1 is an old earthen dam fabricated in 1985.
Anchale Dam
Another important dam of Maharashtra is the Anchale dam. It is situated in the district of Dhule on the famous river Kanheri. The basin of the Tapi river which originates from Satpura range gives its lap to the river Kanheri. Anchale dam is an old dam constructed in 1983.
One more important dam in the list is the Aandhali dam. Its location is in Satara, a historical city which has been the stronghold of the Marathas. The dam is built on the Man River located in the basin of river Krishna.
Andhra Valley is the name of one of the most famous dams of Maharashtra. It is in the city Pune in Maharashtra. The Krishna River basin has a river named Andhra. So, the dam is situated in the valley of river Andhra. It has been made for hydroelectric power generation and also serves irrigation purposes.
Anjandoh is a well-known dam of Maharashtra. It has been installed in the city of Aurangabad in the basin of river Godavari. This dam has been forged on the river Local Nallah. It helps in irrigation by covering a large area in the vicinity.
An important dam of Maharashtra is Antargaon also. It was built in the city of Yavatmal in Maharashtra. The river Godavari provides the basin to river Khooni Nala on which the dam is located. It was constructed in 1984. This dam is a very important source of water for irrigation in the area.
Maharashtra has a crucial dam in the city of Washim. The name of the dam is Ansing. It has been built in the river Local Nallah which uses the basin of river Godavari. It facilitates irrigation in the vicinity. It was erected in 2004.
The dam named Anjagaon has been constructed in the district of Nagpur in Maharashtra. It is situated on the river Local Nallah in the basin of the river Godavari. It was installed for irrigation in 1976.
Conclusion
The dams of Ansing, Antargaon, Ancharwadi-1 and Ancharwadi-2, Anjanapalshi, Anjandoh are some very important dams of the state of Maharashtra. Despite receiving a good amount of rainfall and having abundance of rivers in the state, people of Maharashtra struggle for water. In recent years, rainfall has also declined which has increased the problem. The poor management can be blamed. If we utilize the full potential of the dams and use them efficiently with intelligent and proper use of the water of dams, it can be a game changer for people of Maharashtra as the water crisis is getting severe day by day.
