It is also called a semicircular arc.

If a circle is considered then an arc can be then a portion of the circumference denoted by BA or AB can be taken as the arc as the order of points does not matter. It can be stated as AB or BA with a curved line over it and it is read in the form ‘arc AB’.

Arc tracking

Arc Tracking can be defined as the method through which a material made of plastic is transformed to conductive from non – conductive through the method of degradation of service. In the following section some conditions have been provided, all of which are necessary to carry out arc tracking. 

  • Contamination leads to an electrical circuit completion across the surface of the polymer. For instance a solution of saltwater on battery from road sprays.

  • A surface of polymer involving terminals that have a huge difference of voltage among them. For instance, a battery case involving negative and positive terminals.

  • Sufficient time as well as voltage.

Several researchers have suggested separate theories about how arc tracking happens. However, everyone has the same opinion that the polymer is liable to break down to a point such that it becomes conductive. These can allow a circuit to be complete within the two terminals. If this happens then there is a chance that the polymer’s resistance heating can occur in turn causing ignition. When Direct current or DC was done it provided information regarding the voltages needed to start arc tracking in a highly automotive environment. An experiment was carried out in this regard and the results revealed that Arc tracking is not likely to be a source of ignition in vehicles. It is not possible in a 24-volt system and 12-volt system but can serve as a source of ignition in 42 volt systems or even higher.
