Shiv Nadar was born on 14th of July 1945 in Moolaipozhi in Chennai. His nickname
is Magus which means “wizard” in persian. He is the son of Sivasubramanian Nadar and Vamasundari Devi. He is an industrialist by profession and the founder of IT company HCL Technologies Ltd and the founder of Shiv Nadar Foundation. He is one of India’s richest persons and a Forbes billionaire with a net worth of USD 15.8 billion. HCL was co-founded by Shiv Nadar in 1976 in a garage to make calculators and microprocessors.
Biography
A billionaire industrialist and philanthropist is the founder of Hindustan computers Ltd(HCL). Presently HCL has a global presence in 42 countries in the form of offices, delivery centres and innovation labs. It has an employee strength of 1,37,000 professionals. Shiv Nadar’s farsightedness has helped him establish a billion dollar empire which serves as an hotspot for information technology in the present world. Working in a 10-12 hours job was not his thing, he realised he wanted to do something else and started his own company.
Coming Up of HCL
Nadar’s climbing up the success steps started when he started his own venture MicroComp Limited in a partnership. This partnership included Ajai Chowdhry (Ex-Chairman, HCL), Arjun Malhotra (CEO and Chairman, Headstrong), Subhash Arora, Yogesh Vaidya, S. Raman, Mahendra Pratap and DS Puri. Shiv Nadar was the largest shareholder of the company. Back then it was focussed on selling teledigital calculators in the Indian markets. These teledigital calculators were sold under the brand name of Televista. In 1976 Nadar realised the need for computers in India, IBM was the only dominant computer company back then and it was exiting because of political reasons. This gave HCL a wider market space to sell their microcomputers in India. With an initial investment of Rs 18,700 ,he started India’s biggest technological revolution by creating HCL.
HCL was the first public private partnership as the Uttar Pradesh government granted him additional Rs 20 lakh in exchange of 26 percent stake in the company. After this it was named Hindustan Computers Limited (HCL) with a nationwide resonance. HCL 8C was the first personal computer launched and it was based on the Rockwell PP 8 microprocessor. It came with basic language and a powerful Merge Package. HCL Overseas Limited was incorporated as a provider of technology development services which after a few years was renamed as HCL Technologies Limited.
2020 saw Nadar retiring and giving his post to his daughter Roshni Nadar Malhotra, she became the executive director and CEO while Nadar continues as the managing director. Roshni Nadar Malhotra is the first woman in India to lead a listed IT company in India. She was ranked 54th on the Forbes World’s 100 Most Powerful Women list in 2019.
Career
Shiv Nadar did his early education from Town Higher Secondary School Kumbakonam. He also studied at Alango Corporation Higher Secondary School
and later enrolled at St Joseph’s boys Higher Secondary School.He received
Pre University degree at American College, Madurai and a degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from PSG college of Technology, Coimbatore, in the field of electrical and electronics engineering.
His career started in 1967 from Walchand Group’s College of engineering Pune but it was for a very short stint. He quit the job and established the HCL enterprises in a garage in the year 1976.Initially HCL made
calculators and microprocessors.In the year 1980,HCL set its footprints outside India with the introduction of selling computers in Singapore.
NIIT (National Institute of Information Technology) was set up in 1981 to address the growing need for computer education in India. Nadar invested into the institution and was made its biggest shareholder till 2003.
By 1983, client-server architecture, 16-bit microprocessors and relational data base management system started being developed by HCL. This gave HCL a wider spectrum to grow and earn a name in India. In 1984, HCL flew across the globe for sourcing of computer parts and launched Busybee, a personal computer running a native UNIX based operating system developed by HCL, making it a global software venture.
2007 saw Vineet Nayar named as the CEO of HCL Technologies, letting Nadar move away from corporate affairs to focus on his philanthropic dreams. He however continues to be Chairman and HCL’s largest shareholder.

The present net worth of Shiv Nadar is USD 28.7 billion.He controls 60 percent of Indian software developers.The Nadar family also owns 50 percent of computer maker and service business HCL Infosystems.The Nadar family also owns several paintings valued at over USD 85 million.
Awards
In 2008 Indian Govt has awarded Padma Bhushan for his immense
contribution. In the year 2021 he was awarded Global Leadership award
by US India Business Council.In 2014 he was awarded Corporate Citizen Award. CNBC TV18 has honoured him with the Lifetime Achievement award at the India Business Leader Awards 2021. In Spite of mastering his field he has also donated $1 billion for welfare of the society. At present he has resigned from Chairman’s post in HCL, though continues to be the managing director and presides in the post of Chief Strategy Officer of HCL.
Shiv Nadar University
NIRF ranked Shiv Nadar University 56 in 2021 among universities. It is a private research university founded in 2011 in Noida, Uttar Pradesh in India. Shiv Nadar Foundation launched a series of initiatives among which this university is one. On 1st February 2016, Rupamanjari Ghosh took charge as the second Vice Chancellor of the university.
School of Engineering, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, School of Management and Entrepreneurship, School of Natural Sciences and an Academy of Continuing Education are the 4 schools the university has spread its multidisciplinary departments into.
