Defence is an important sector of any country, and defence majorly consists of three sectors: the army, the Air Force and the Navy. The army operates in the land area; the Air Force operates above the ground, while the Navy operates in the seas and the country’s oceans. The Indian Navy has initiated project 75 alpha to procure attack submarines powered by nuclear reactions. The government approved the construction of six submarines under this project in India in February 2015. Take a brief look at the project 75 alpha of the Indian Navy.
The Indian Navy
The Indian Navy is a division of the Indian military. The president of India is considered to be the supreme commander of India’s Navy. The Indian Navy is led by a four-star admiral, the Chief of the Naval Staff. The rank of the Admiral of the fleet for the Navy exists; however, this rank hasn’t been conferred to any officer of the Indian Navy till today. The Indian Navy generally operates in the Persian Gulf and the Horn of Africa up to the strait of Malacca. Many anti-piracy operations regularly are conducted by the Indian Navy with the help of navies of other nations. Regular two to three months deployments are conducted by the Indian Navy into the East and South China and the Mediterranean Sea to the west.
The role of the Indian Navy
The current functions or responsibilities of the Indian Navy are given below.
- Influencing India’s Maritime area of interest to help fulfil India’s economic, political and security objectives.
- Together with the other Indian armed forces, defending the Territory or Maritime interest of India against any threats during the times of war and peace.
- Ensure order in the maritime zones of India along with the Indian coast guard.
Let us learn about the project 75 Alpha of the Indian Navy.
Project 75 Alpha
The Indian Navy wants to obtain nuclear-powered attack submarines under this project, 75 Alpha. The construction of six such submarines began in February 2015 after the approval of the Indian government. Let us understand what is 75 in project 75. Project 75 and 75I were code names of two independent submarine building lines in the submarine construction plan. That is the meaning of 75 in project 75. The six submarines constructed under the project 75 Alpha will be well-equipped with weapons, modern sensors, an Air Independent Propulsion Plant based on the fuel cell, new missiles, and measures for countering the enemy’s attacks. The latest submarines and modern technology designs will become part of the Indian Navy project 75 Alpha. The overall purpose of this plan is to develop the abilities of private sectors so that they would be able to design and construct complicated systems to fulfil the needs of the Indian armed forces during future war times. The development of industries in manufacturing submarine parts and systems can also occur through project 75 Alpha.
Let us take a look at the Indian Navy’s 30-year submarine plan.
30-year Submarine Plan of the Indian NavyÂ
The 30-year submarine building plan of the Indian Navy was first designed around the Kargil wartime and was approved by Gol. The plan involved building 24 submarines by the end of the year 2030. There were two separate submarine building lines with Project 75 and Project 75 I code names. Total construction of 24 submarines was to be done, out of which 18 marines will be conventional submarines. However, the remaining 6 submarines will be nuclear-powered attack submarines which would be useful during a war. Currently, the Indian navy consists of 14 submarines of the conventional type. But not all of them work at the same time. Only half of these submarines, like around 7, will be operating at any time. India is also developing the Scorpene-class submarines as part of this plan, and they are the most modern conventional submarines in the entire world. The features that make Scorpene-class submarines the best are their high technology stealth features, the noises it radiates in the surroundings are quite low, and the silencing techniques used in such submarines are quite advanced.
This was an overview of Project 75 Alpha and the 30-year plan of the Indian Navy.
Conclusion:
The Indian Navy is an important part of Indian Defence forces as India shares more than 7000 kilometres of the maritime border with other nations. Hence, the Indian Navy had developed the 30-year submarine building plan of which the project 75 Alpha is part. 24 submarines are to be constructed under the 30-year plan, out of which 18 will be conventional submarines. Project 75 Alpha consists of building 6 nuclear-powered attack submarines in war times. This will provide the Indian Navy with high-tech submarines and lead to the development of submarine building Industries in India.
