Why in News:

  • The President conferred Kirti Chakras on armed forces personnel for exceptional courage and gallantry during the Defence Investiture Ceremony.

Salient Facts

  • Kirti Chakra is India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award, after the Ashoka Chakra.
  • Awarded for conspicuous gallantry, indomitable courage, self-sacrifice or valour away from the battlefield.
  • Can be awarded to personnel of the Armed Forces, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), State/UT Police Forces, and also to civilians.
  • It may be awarded posthumously.
  • Instituted in 1952 as the Ashoka Chakra Class-II.
  • Renamed as Kirti Chakra in 1967.
