SSN-AUKUS Submarines

Why in news?

The United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia have signed a new agreement to build Australia's SSN-AUKUS submarines, hailing it as a significant milestone in their defense cooperation efforts.

About News

  • Under the new trilateral Security partnership, Australia’s ASC and UK-based BAE Systems will build the SSN-AUKUS submarines for the Royal Australian Navy.
  • The SSN-AUKUS will be equipped for intelligence, surveillance, undersea warfare and strike missions, and will provide maximum interoperability among AUKUS partners.
  • The MH-60R Seahawk helicopter, or the 'Romeo', as an anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare platform. 
  • SSN-AUKUS will increase opportunities for industrial base collaboration, strengthen our collective industrial base capacity, and generate economic growth in defense and national security sectors in all three countries.
  • All AUKUS partners are making significant investments to ensure the success of Optimal Pathway and are working at pace to transform and integrate our trilateral industrial bases to support SSN cooperation.
  • AUKUS is a trilateral security partnership designed to create a stronger, more resilient trilateral submarine industrial base, supporting submarine production and maintenance in all three countries.

Socio economic, caste census website out of order, Ministry cites ‘technical reasons’

Why in news?

The data for the Socioeconomic and Caste Census (SECC) is no longer accessible in the public domain. The portal hosting the data has been unavailable for months.

About News

  • The data of the Socio Economic and Caste Census (SECC) 2011, the first nationwide caste-based headcount since 1931.
  • The SECC was conducted in 2011 by three separate authorities— the census in rural areas was conducted by the MoRD.
  • In urban areas, it was conducted under the administrative jurisdiction of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation (MoHUPA).
  • And the caste census was conducted under the administrative control of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
  • Although its caste-wise data was never made public, the SECC 2011 offers insights about the economic deprivation of social groups such as Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and OBCs. This information is used by the Government to identify beneficiaries of several schemes including Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri, Jan Arogya Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin.

Netravati Riverfront Project

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has taken suo motu cognizance of the Netravati Riverfront Project in Mangaluru.

About

  • The Netravathi rises between Kudrermukh and Ballalaryan Durga in the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka at an elevation of about 1000 m at 750 20' East longitude and 300 10’ North latitude and flows generally in a North-South direction for 40 km up to Gohattu, where it takes a turn towards the West and there after flows in East-West direction up to its out fall into the Arabian Sea near Mangalore.
  • There is one CWC Hydrological Observation Station at Bantwal on this river.
  • The Kumaradhara, a major left-bank tributary joins near the village Uppinangadi.
  • The total length of the Netravathi is 103 km from its source to the outfall.
  • The river drains an area of 3,657 sq km.

Order of the Druk Gyalpo

Why in news?

Prime Minister of India was conferred the Order of the Druk Gyalpo, Bhutan's highest civilian decoration, by His Majesty the King of Bhutan in a public ceremony at the Tendrelthang, Thimphu.

About Order of the Druk Gyalpo

  • Prime Minister of India is the first foreign leader to be given this prestigious award.
  • As per ranking and precedence established, the Order of the Druk Gyalpo was instituted as the decoration for lifetime achievement and is the pinnacle of the honor system in Bhutan, taking precedence over all orders, decorations and medals.
  • The award recognizes Prime Minister of India contribution to strengthening India-Bhutan friendship and his people centric leadership.
  • The citation added that the award also honours India’s rise as a global power under his leadership, and celebrates Bhutan’s special bond with India.

Pushpak

Why in news?

Recently, ISRO successfully conducted a ‘Pushpak’ Reusable Landing Vehicle landing experiment.

About

  • In a significant mission, the Indian Air Force (IAF) collaborated with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in the Pushpak Reusable Landing Vehicle (RLV) LEX 02 landing experiment and dropped the 'Pushpak' from an altitude of 4.5 km.
  • The shuttle was dropped from 4.5 km above the earth to a runway in Karnataka's Chitradurga by IAF's Chinook helicopter, where the landing experiment was conducted earlier in the day.
  • Reusable Landing Vehicle (RLV) LEX 02
    • This landing experiment is the second of a series of experiments conducted by the space agency.
    • The RLV-LEX-01 mission, which was accomplished last year, the RLV-LEX-02 demonstrated the autonomous landing capability of RLV off-nominal initial conditions at the release from a Chinook helicopter.
      • The RLV was made to undertake more difficult manoeuvres with dispersions, correct both cross-range and down range and land on the runway in a fully autonomous mode.
