IOQM i.e. Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics, organised by the Mathematics Teachers’ Association, would be the first stage of the programme in India. It will be a 3-hour exam with a total of 30 questions. Each of the 30 questions will have an integer answer from 00 to 99. The Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT), Mathematics Teachers Association of India (MTAI) and Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (Tata Institute of Fundamental Research – HBCSE) will combinedly organize the Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics (IOQM).

Due to the covid pandemic around the country and the world, has affected the National Olympiad Programme in Mathematics for the academic year 2021-22. Now, the test authorities have made some changes to the upcoming test as an amendment. Before this pandemic, there were a total of 4 stages to clear this Mathematics Olympiad, but this year, they have reduced it to 3. Till last year, there were 2 separate exams which were the PRMO and RMO. PRMO was the first stage while RMO was the second stage exam, now both of them have been combined into IOQM, which is known as the Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics.

  • Those students who were born after January 1, 2010 won’t be eligible for the IOQM
  • The students who are fulfilling the above criteria and study in the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya and Kendriya Vidyalaya will be eligible to appear in the IOQM. There will be no separate IOQM exam for the students of KV and JNV
  • INMO 2022 awardees will be eligible for the INMO 2023 without qualifying through the IOQM exam if they fulfil the eligibility criteria for IMO 2023 and EGMO 2024
  • The student must be residing and studying in India since 30 October 2020 or earlier OR must be studying in an Indian school system since 30 October 2020 or earlier
  • It will be the responsibility of the students to ensure the described eligibility criteria are satisfied
  • The students must be eligible to hold an Indian Passport
  • According to the Madras High Court, the candidates with OCI status will not be eligible for the selection to the Indian team in the International Mathematical Olympiad
  • It is the responsibility of the students to ensure that the given eligibility criteria will be satisfied. In case it is found at any stage of the programme that a student does not meet the criteria, they may be disqualified for this programme

Qualification Criteria from IOQM to INMO

The candidate’s merit list will be prepared according to the given criteria –

1. The top 600 in the IOQM merit list will be qualified for INMO regardless of the regional quota. In this pool –

  • The number of class 12th students will be 100
  • The number of class 8th,9th,10th, and 11th students will be 500

2. From each region including the KV and JNV, a minimum of –

  • 25 students (class 11th or below)
  • 5 students (class 12th)
  • 3 girl students from class 11th or below irrespective of the number of girls students qualifying in the above rules
  • They will qualify for the INMO regardless of the scores provided each qualifying candidate has a score above a minimum cutoff score of 30% of the total marks of the IOQM exam
  • No girl candidate of class 12th will be eligible for under the girl’s quota. Any girl student of class 12th can qualify for INMO from IOQM if she is selected among the top 100 candidates in class 12th

3. A maximum of 6 students will be selected from the category of the students residing abroad and studying in the Indian School system, which is different from KV.

4. Among the selected 6 students, no more than 1 student will be from class 12 and no more than 5 students will be from class 11th or below grade. No separate girls quota will be considered

5. Any student who scores at least 20% of the total IOQM paper will get a certificate.

Stages of Mathematical Olympiad

The selection process has been changed to a 5 stage process which is a one-time process. Usually, there is a standard 6-stage process for the selection of the teams to represent the country at the International Mathematical Olympiad.

Stage One  – IOQM (Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics)

The IOQM will be a 3-hour examination. It consists of 30 questions and each one has an integer answer in the range of 00 to 99. Its syllabus and standard of the examination will be the same as that of the PRMO of last year. Those who do well in this stage will be qualified for the next stage which is INMO (Indian National Mathematical Olympiad).

Stage Two – INMO (Indian National Mathematical Olympiad)

The INMO will be the 4 hour exam. It will have 6 questions. Its syllabus and exam standard will be the same as the previous year’s. The last academic year’s exam was held on February 22, 2022. The merit list for INMO 2022 will be prepared on the basis of the following criteria –

  • Top 300 (class 11th or below grade)+60 (class 12th category) from each region in IOQM will get a certificate. The minimum cut-off to be secured was 5% of the total marks of the IOQM paper. This is not the qualifying criteria for INMO.
  • The top 540 in the IOQM merit list will qualify for the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad. Under this category – The number of class 12th students will be 90 while the number of class 8th to 11th students will be 450.
  • The minimum of 30 students from class 11th and below grade, 6 from class 12th and 5 girls students irrespective of the number of girl students qualifying in class 11th or below class.
  • No girl candidate from class 12th will be eligible to qualify for INMO.

Stage Three – OCSC (Orientation Cum Selection Campus)

In this stage, the candidates will undergo some experimental and theoretical sessions and only 35 to 40 students from all over the country will be able to compete against each other to qualify for the next steps. At these camps, orientation is provided for the theoretical, observational and experimental tasks.

Stage Four – Pre Departure Camp

At this stage, the 4 to 6 students who qualify for this stage will go under the rigorous training programme. It will be held at HBCSE in theory and experiments. Special labs have been developed for this purpose.

Stage Five – International Olympiad

This olympiad programme culminates with the Indian students participation (4-6) in the IMO. The students will be accompanied by some teachers.

IOQM Mock Test

Here, at Unacademy, we have provided the mock test for the students who are appearing for the IOQM exam. The students can practice well and analyze their performance before the actual exam.
