Equal Sign

In this article we will study about the equal sign and it’s Properties.

Table of Content
  •

The term “equal” comes from the Latin word “equalis,” which means “uniform,” “identical,” or “equal,” and is derived from aequus (level , even , or just).

In his book The Whetstone of Witte, Welsh mathematician Robert Recorde first published the  Of equality ‘ = ‘, which is now universally accepted in mathematics for equality (1557).. The symbol’s initial form was substantially larger than the current one. In his book, Recorde recounts how he came up with the “Gemowe lines” design (meaning twin lines, from the Latin gemellus).

Definition:-

The equal sign, sometimes known as the equality sign, is a mathematical symbol that represents equality in a well-defined function. It may be found between two expressions with the same value in an equation, or it may be used to analyse the conditions under which they have the same value.

The symbol “=” is also known as “the equal sign,” or “equals,” and it is critical to know how to speak or articulate the correct phrases for a symbol like this. The primary thing here is , “What does the equal to sign mean?” “We cannot use the symbol’s name to clarify what the symbol implies,” we must add as a suggestion to this question. “Is” or “has the same value as” are the two meanings of the equal sign. So that’s all the equal to sign has to provide – nothing more, and nothing less.

Example :- 10 + 2 = 12

                     9 × 4 = 36 …….etc

Equal Sign Symbol :-

The equal sign is represented by the symbol “=”. (two parallel horizontal lines). When the two quantities to be compared are exactly the same, this symbol is used. Each feature of the comparison is represented by a distinct symbol.

Equal Sign in Maths:-

We tend to “equate” two elements in math if we try to prove equality between two expressions. As a result, the equal sign is used to demonstrate mathematical equality between two representatives. In mathematics, the equal sign denotes that the quantities, equations, or expressions written on both sides are equal.

The symbol “=” denotes that whatever is on the left of the sign is equal to whatever is on the right of the sign in terms of amount or value.

The equal sign is used in mathematics to define a basic statement of fact in a specific case, create definitions, conditional terms, and indicate universal equivalence, among other things. An important point to remember about the equal sign is that an equation cannot be written without it.

Example :- 2 + 5 =7

                  X² – 5X + 6 = 0

Different Types of Symbol with Equal Sign:-

There are several mathematical symbols and their meanings connected to equality. The equal sign is represented by the symbol “=”. (two parallel horizontal lines). When the two quantities to be compared are exactly the same, this symbol is used. Each feature of the comparison is represented by a distinct symbol.

Here’s a list of some of the most common comparison words and their symbols, all of which are related to the equal to symbol in math are:-

  • The Equal to sign : “ = ” : Absolutely the same
  • Equivalence : “ ≡ ” : Very similar
  • Not equal to : “ ≠ ” : Absolutely not equal
  • Approximation : “ ≈ ” : Almost same
  • Congruent : “ ≅ ” : Same shape and sizes
  • Similar : “ ~ ” : Same shape and size may or may not be same
  • The Less than equal to : “ ≤ ” : Either less than or equal to
  • The greater than equal to : “ ≥ ” :Either greater then equal to

Different uses of equal sign:-

There are various uses of equal sign in different field and area such as:-

  • Mathematical equations are one of the most important applications where we are using equal signs.
  • We use equal sign in measurement.
  • We use equal signs in geometry formulas.
  • The two parallel lines representing a double bond are frequently represented by an equal sign in chemical formulations.
  • Between the clitic and the word to which the clitic is linked, an equal sign is used.

Conclusion:-

The equal symbol signifies ‘Equality.’ It is a mathematical symbol that is used to represent equality in a certain sense, according to the definition. As a result, whenever we try to show equality between two expressions in mathematics, we prefer to “equate” the two elements. As a result, the equal sign is used to indicate that two amounts are equal. In arithmetic and algebraic equations, the equal to sign is most commonly used. It is a crucial component in the creation of mathematical equations.

The equal symbol has appeared in a variety of mathematical contexts, including arithmetic, algebra, trigonometry, set theory, and so on. The equal sign has been employed in fixed command of standings in mathematics.

Ans :-Yes , When discussing the equality of geometric shapes, it is preferable to use the term congruent. Congruent is another name for equal to, and it’s used when two shapes have exactly equal sides and angles.

Ans :- Equal to sign is not a mathematical operator. It is a math symbol that is used as an equality sign to signify that two quantities are equal.

Ans:- The equal to symbol indicates that something is equal. It demonstrates that the quantities printed on both sides of an equal sign are the same or equal.

Ans :- The symbol for a triple equal sign is ≡. It’s used to show that one object is the same as the other. As a result, a triple equal sign denotes “same to.” If A  ≡ B, then A is the same or identical as B.
