Common Fungal Diseases in Humans

This article summarises the topic of fungal diseases in humans. How to prevent them and their symptoms, prevention and their causes

Introduction

Anyone can have a fungus infection, which can arise in any region of the body. A woman with a vaginal yeast infection, a jock with an athlete’s foot, and a baby with thrush are just a few examples.

Fungi are microorganisms that have a substance called chitin in their cell walls. Many varieties of mushrooms, as well as some fungi, are edible. Another fungus, such as aspergillus, is exceedingly poisonous and can cause life-threatening illnesses.

A variety of fungi can cause fungal infections. Types of fungi in humans that aren’t normally found on or inside your body can colonize it and cause an illness in some situations. Fungi that are typically present on or inside your body can multiply out of control in other instances, resulting in an infection.

Infections caused by fungi are infectious. In rare circumstances, disease-causing fungi can be transmitted from infected animals or polluted soil or surfaces.

Common types of fungal infection in humans

The athlete’s foot

It is a condition that affects athletes.

Tinea pedis is another name for an athlete’s foot. It’s a fungal illness that can harm your feet’ skin, as well as your hands and nails. Dermatophytes, a fungus that thrives in the warm and damp spaces between your toes, cause the infection.

It’s very frequent among athletes, and it can be passed down from one person to the next. You can also get it from contaminated surfaces like locker room flooring or public showers.

Causes

Athletes’ feet are caused by a fungus that feeds on the dead tissue in your hair, toenails, and outer skin layers. The infection can be caused by at least four different types of fungus. Trichophyton rubrum is the most prevalent.

Symptoms

  • Depending on your skin color, inflamed skin can seem reddish, purple, or grayish
  • It’s either burning or stinging
  • Blisters
  • The skin on the bottom of the foot is dry and scaly and extends up the side

Prevention

Keep your feet clean, dry, and cool at all times. Swimming pools, public showers, and foot baths should all be avoided. Wear sandals or alternate your shoes every 2-3 days to keep them fresh when feasible. do not wear closed shoes and socks made of a fabric that takes a long time to dry (for example, nylon).

Itch in the jockstrap

Tinea cruris is another name for jock itch. It’s a fungal illness that can affect the skin around your groin, inner thighs, and buttocks. It’s caused by dermatophytes, a fungus that thrives in warm, humid environments, just like athlete’s foot.

This virus primarily affects males and boys, although it can also affect women and girls.

Causes

Jock itch is caused by a fungus that can be passed from person to person or transmitted through the exchange of contaminated towels or clothing. The same fungus that causes an athlete’s foot is often to blame. Because the fungus can travel on your hands or a towel, the infection frequently travels from your feet to your crotch.

Symptoms

Jock itch usually starts with reddening the skin in the groin crease. In a half-moon form, it frequently spreads over the upper thigh. The rash may be ring-shaped with a line of tiny blisters around it. The skin may be flaky or scaly, burning or itching.

Prevention

  • Shower or bathe daily and after participating in sports or working out
  • Stay as dry as possible. Using a clean towel, pat your groin area dry
  • Allowing people to use your towels or other personal items is not a good idea
  • Put on fresh clothes
  • Avoid wearing clothing and underwear that are too tight

Ringworm

A fungal condition that can damage your skin and scalp is ringworm. Ringworm is a type of fungus that grows on the skin, especially in damp and humid areas of the body. Dermatophytes cause it, just like an athlete’s foot and jock itch.

Causes

A form of fungus that consumes keratin causes ringworm. Dermatophytes are the name for these organisms. The skin, scalp, hair, and nails are the only portions of the body with enough keratin to attract them, dermatophytes attack them.

Symptoms

  • The skin is itchy
  • Ring shaped rash
  • Skin that is red, scaly, and cracked
  • Hair loss is a common occurrence

Prevention

  • Keep your skin moisture-free and clean at all times
  • Make sure you’re wearing shoes that allow air to circulate about your feet freely
  • Don’t go about barefoot in places like locker rooms and public showers
  • Keep your fingernails and toenails clean by clipping them short
  • Change your socks and undergarments, at least once a day

Yeast Infections

When candida, a form of fungus, grows too much, it causes various ailments. Yeast infections are not spreadable.

Warm, moist, wrinkled parts of your body, such as your armpits and groin, are the most prevalent sites for infections. Obese or diabetic people are more likely to experience them. using antibiotics is also at high risk.

Causes

Candida or Monilia, a yeast-like fungus, is the most common cause of yeast infections. This fungus is a natural part of your body’s ecosystem. This fungus is usually kept under control by your body’s immune system. If you are unwell or using antibiotics, it can cause infection.

Symptoms

  • A flaming sensation, especially during urination or intercourse
  • The vulva is red and swollen
  • Soreness and pain in the vaginal area
  • A rash on the vaginal area

Prevention

  • Maintain a clean environment. To clean your vaginal area, use water and light, unscented soap
  • Wipe from front to back after using the paper towel to avoid spreading yeast or bacteria between your anus, urinary tract, and vagina
  • Swimsuits should not be worn for longer than necessary. Because it keeps everything warm and wet, wearing a damp swimsuit encourages yeast spread
  • Avoid wearing clothing that is too tight. Clothing that is too tight keeps your genitals warm and damp

Toenail fungus

Nail fungus appears as a white or yellow patch under the point of your nail or toenail, and it is a frequent ailment. Nail fungus can cause your nail to disintegrate, darken and thicken at the edge as the illness progresses. It might impact several pins at once.

Causes

Various fungal species cause fungal nail infections (fungi). Dermatophyte, a form of fungus, is the most common cause. Diseases of the nails can also be caused by yeast and molds. fungal infection can be acquired by people of any age, but it is more common among the elderly.

Symptoms

  • The nail may discolor and turn white, black, yellow, or green
  • The nail may grow and distort, resulting in an odd shape or roughness that is difficult to trim
  • Pain or discomfort, especially while utilizing or pressing on the affected toe or finger

Prevention

  • Wear sweat-wicking socks or switch socks frequently throughout the day
  • Choose shoes made of breathable materials
  • Discard old shoes or use disinfectants or antifungal powders to clean them

Conclusion

A primitive organism is a fungus. Mold, mildew, and mushrooms are examples. Fungi can be found in the air, soil, plants, and water. Some creatures reside within the human body. Only approximately half of all fungi are dangerous.

Some fungi reproduce by dispersing microscopic spores into the air. The spores can be inhaled, or they can land on you. Common fungal diseases in humans usually begin in the lungs or on the skin as a result. If you have a weaker immune system or are on antibiotics, you are more susceptible to contracting a fungal infection.

Fungi are notoriously tough to eradicate. You can apply for the medicine directly to the diseased region for skin and nail infections. Severe infections can also be treated with antifungal medications taken orally.
