Bar magnet

Bar magnet is a kind of permanent magnet opposite to that of electromagnets which are temporary magnet. The intensity of bar magnet cannot be increased by choice but generally it has higher intensity and magnetic potential

A bar magnet is a rectangular piece of metal that is permanently magnetic. It is divided into two poles, North and South. The field is created without the use of any current. It generates its magnetic field. Refrigerator magnets and compass needles are examples of bar magnets. When suspended freely, the bar magnet automatically aligns itself along the magnetic field.

Bar magnets are used in laboratories, radios, televisions, and medical devices.

The same poles of two magnets repel each other, whereas the opposite poles attract. The laws are known as the attraction and repulsion laws.

Bar Magnet Meaning

Bar magnet is a kind of permanent magnet opposite to that of electromagnets which are temporary magnets. The intensity of a bar magnet cannot be increased by choice but generally it has higher intensity and magnetic potential. Bar magnet has a permanent invisible magnetic field which is immutable. Bar magnet has maximum separation between its poles i.e. the north and south pole are at opposite ends of the magnet. Magnetic field lines are parallel inside the bar magnet.

Bar magnets made of alnico and neodymium:

A discussion of bar magnets would be incomplete if Alnico and Neodymium bar magnets were not mentioned. Alnico magnets are made up primarily of aluminium, nickel, cobalt, and iron. These magnets generate a strong magnetic field and keep that even, when subjected to high temperatures. Neodymium bar magnets are magnets made of neodymium, boron, and iron. Both magnets are extremely powerful, but also extremely fragile.

Properties of bar magnet

The properties of a bar magnet are similar to those of permanent magnets.. At both ends of the bar magnet, there is a north pole and a south pole. Even if you break a bar magnet down the middle, both pieces will have a north pole and a south pole, regardless of how many pieces you break it down into.

Its magnetic force is strongest at the pole. When suspended in the air by a thread, the magnet will not come to rest until the poles are aligned in a north-south direction. This property is used by a mariner’s compass to determine direction.

Types of bar magnet

A rectangular magnet in the shape of a bar can be classified into two types: cylindrical bar magnets and rectangular bar magnets. Both types of bar magnets are capable of producing a strong magnetic field.

1. Magnetic Cylindrical Bar

Because it resembles a cylindrical rod, the cylindrical bar magnet is also known as a rod magnet. Because the thickness of such a magnet is greater than the diameter, it has the ability to increase its magnetism. A cylindrical bar magnet is primarily used in education, scientific research, and experiments.

2. Magnet for a Rectangular Bar

A rectangular bar magnet is defined as a rectangular-shaped bar magnet with two poles and the ability to generate a relatively strong magnetic field. This type of magnet is primarily used in the manufacturing of products in all engineering sectors.

What is a magnetic pole in a Bar Magnet?

The strongest external magnetic field is found at each end of a magnet. A bar magnet suspended in the Earth’s magnetic field orients itself north–south. A north magnetic pole is the north-seeking pole of such a magnet, or any similar pole. A south magnetic pole is any pole that is similar to the south-seeking pole. Magnets with opposite poles attract each other, while magnets with opposite poles repel each other.

Application of bar magnet

  • A bar magnet is used to separate useful magnetic substances such as steel and iron from waste using the magnetic separation method. This is accomplished as follows. The crane’s long arm is equipped with an electromagnet. This is lowered over the waste heap and the electromagnet is turned on.
  • Generally, a bar magnet is used in school and college laboratories to perform different electrostatic experiments.
  • Devices like telephone, radio and television are equipped with bar magnets.
  • At large scale, bar magnets are used to collect loose metals and iron scraps.
  • It is also used to retain magnetism of existing magnets.

Conclusion

Bar magnet is a kind of permanent magnet opposite to that of electromagnets which are temporary magnets. The intensity of a bar magnet cannot be increased by choice but generally it has higher intensity and magnetic potential. At both ends of the bar magnet, there is a north pole and a south pole. A rectangular bar magnet is defined as a rectangular-shaped bar magnet with two poles and the ability to generate a relatively strong magnetic field. A bar magnet is a rectangular object made of iron, steel, or any other ferromagnetic substance or ferromagnetic composite with permanent magnetic properties..

Magnetite from iron ore, also known as lodestone, is a natural permanent magnet. Other permanent magnets can be created by applying a magnetic force to certain materials. When the force is removed, the magnetic properties of these materials are retained.

The first magnets were discovered in a naturally occurring mineral called magnetite, rather than invented. Magnetite was traditionally discovered by the ancient Greeks.

Consider a magnet to be a collection of tiny magnets called magnetic domains that have been jammed together. Each of them strengthens the magnetic fields of the others. Each has a teeny-tiny north and south pole. If you cut one in half, the newly cut faces will become the smaller pieces’ new north or south poles.
