Frequently Asked Questions
CBSE Class 11 is an essential year for Learners as it sets the foundation for all the important topics to be covered in Class 12, the last class before you complete your schooling. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducts term exams for Class 11 every year in September and March. It is also a critical year to start your preparation for entrance exams. In contrast to Class 10, where every subject is taught in a generalised manner, in Class 11, you have to select a stream of your choice.
Learners have to choose between three streams - Arts, Science, and Commerce. Here's a brief about all the streams.
Learners interested in pursuing a career in Engineering, Medical or Architecture need to choose the Science stream. If you want to study medicine, opt for PCB (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology). On the other hand, you should choose PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Maths) for a career in a Technical or Engineering field. PCMB (Physics, Chemistry, Maths, and Biology) is also an option if you are unsure about your career path or wish to pursue a career in the Bioengineering or Biomedical field.
If you choose Commerce in Class 11, you are up for a glorious career in the Financial and Commercial sector. It is a popular choice for candidates who aspire to have a career in Accounting, Investment Banking, Finance, and Entrepreneurship. Commerce students can also choose subjects from the Arts stream, but not from the Science stream.
If you wish to pursue a career in Writing, Filmmaking, Psychology, or Journalism, Arts must be your stream of choice. You can also opt for Economics, Mathematics, and Marketing as electives if you want to pursue economics-related graduate programs.
Subjects you study in CBSE Class 11 will differ based on your chosen stream. There are also further divisions in the Science stream, namely Medical and Non-Medical. Mathematics will be optional in the Commerce stream. You should ideally choose your subjects based on your career goals.
Subjects in Science: CBSE affiliated schools offer subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology (optional), Mathematics (optional), Computer Science, etc.
All subjects in CBSE Class 11 Arts: History, Geography, Political Science, Language, Mathematics (optional), Psychology (optional), Economics (optional), Legal Studies (optional), Fine Arts (optional), Entrepreneurship (optional), Sociology (optional), among others.
Subjects in CBSE Class 11 Commerce: Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics, English, Information Practices/ Mathematics (Optional), Physical Education (Optional), and more.
The detailed syllabus of CBSE Class 11 is available on the official CBSE website. Unacademy provides the updated Class 11 syllabus for all streams, using which Learners can effectively prepare for the exams.
The Science stream consists of four main subjects- Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology, out of which the last two are optional. As for the Humanities stream, the main subjects are History, Geography, and Political Science.
Finally, the main subjects for the Commerce stream are Accountancy, Business Studies, and Economics.
Most Learners can find CBSE Class 11 curriculum overwhelming, given the increased difficulty of subjects. However, with the help of comprehensive study material such as reference books, practice tests, sample question papers, previous years' question papers, chapter-wise study notes, and more, Learners can prepare well for the exam.
In addition, Learners also need to cover the textbooks comprehensively. Also, make sure to solve the various practice exercises provided at the end of the chapters for an in-depth understanding of the topic.
CBSE Class 11 consists of two-term exams, which are conducted in September and March. Preparing for Class 11 examinations can be challenging, as you also need to prepare for the entrance exams. So, it's essential to chalk out an effective study plan that provides you with enough time for revision.
Also, in terms of study material, always refer to NCERT books before turning to a reference book. Don't forget to refer to previous years' question papers and sample papers, as they will provide you with a clear idea about the type of questions you should expect.
Nevertheless, if you have trouble understanding the syllabus or can't understand some concepts during self-study, you need proper guidance. Unacademy can provide you with all the help you need in your exam preparation. With the help of Interactive Live Classes, Learners can easily understand the various topics thoroughly - both from an academic and exam perspective.
Here are some pointers to help you ace the CBSE Class 11 Exams:
Don't carry your study material with you - Don't treat the exam day as a preparation day. Too much last-minute cramming can jumble everything up and send your brain into a spiral. Try to relax as much as you can.
Pack all your stationery and documents - Don't pack your bag on the day of the exam. Pack all the essential stationery and documents like hall tickets the day before your exam. This way, you will not forget crucial documents and save yourself from last-minute panic.
Start with the easy questions - Navigate from easy to difficult questions, not the other way around. Solving the hard ones first will cost you a lot of time, leading to stress or panic. Attempt the easy questions first, as it will also help you approach other questions more confidently.
Get a good night's rest - Don't pull an all-nighter one day before the exam, as you may feel tired and exhausted during the exam. This may also hamper your exam performance. Try to rest well before the exam and keep calm.
CBSE Class 11 Exams are undoubtedly challenging, but you can score excellent marks if you meticulously prepare for the exam. Disciplined self-study and revision will be your key to success. Here are some additional tips you can use to excel in your exams:
Nothing works if you don't have a timetable etched out. As the syllabus is a bit lengthy, a proper schedule will help you cover all the topics thoroughly and leave you time for revision. You must also start with your exam preparation early, as it will provide you with some spare time in the end if you weren't able to completely follow the time table. Lastly, with a timetable, you will have no confusion regarding what and when to study, since everything is already planned.
You need to follow a healthy lifestyle. Eat at least three healthy meals a day and stay hydrated. Moreover, at least 6-8 hours of sleep is suggested for better concentration and a refreshed mind.
Many Learners find it difficult to memorise formulas or understand political theories. If you're one of them, you need to allot more time to these areas. Use reference books to get more clarity on the subjects, or you can attend the Live Classes on Unacademy to clear your doubts. With enough time and effort, you can quickly transform these weaknesses into your strengths!
You can purchase solved sample papers that can help you understand the exam pattern, marks distribution, and types of questions asked and enable you to get enough practice before the test. Solving previous years' question papers is also beneficial and allows you to identify the important topics.
