Statement And Inferences

Are you interested in learning the concept of statements and inferences? If yes, then this guide is going to furnish you with all the information related to the above topics in detail.

In reasoning and inference type questions, a statement is given which is based on practical situations. Then few inferences are given in the question paper. The candidate has to choose the most appropriate type of answer. There can be one or more than two options correct.

The statements are based on the proper real-life practical situations. By reasoning the statements and finding out the correct answer, one will be able to understand the practical problems very easily.

We all want to have a successful life and make the right decisions that lead to a successful life. Hence, with the help of inference, one will be able to find out the right choice that ideally leads to the right decision.

What do you mean by a Statement?

A statement is mainly defined by a group of words combined together, and they convey a piece of meaningful information.

A few examples of statements are given below:

  • I knew that I had forgotten to write the letter to my mom.
  • My the kept talking about the rivalry between the Hindus and the Muslims.
  • Politicians are continuously arguing on the topic of the effective use of exhaustible resources.
  • The weather forecast predicted that the upcoming day would be sunny.
  • My mother will cook a delicious meal tonight.

What do you mean by Inferences?

Reasoning and truth are not the same sides of a coin. They are purely different. Students are often confused between them and use them interchangeably.

There is a difference between what we believe the truth and what the truth is. All people have their own opinions, and there is a difference in their thoughts. There is a difference between what the majority of people think to be and what the actual fact is. So this concept is known as inference.

We use logical reasoning to find out the solution to the inferences or the solution for what is the truth besides what we believe to be the truth. Our inference may be logical or illogical.

Simple arithmetic is an example of inference. Let us consider an example of putting four apples in a basket. If we put two apples in the basket, then we can predict that 4 – 2 = 2 apples are left to be put in the basket. Thus, the inference is that two apples are left to be put in the basket. Hence, simple arithmetic and prediction are the types of logical inferences.

What do you understand by Statement and Arguments?

A statement is formed by a group of words. In a statement and argument type of question, a statement is listed which is purely based on practical situations. There are two types of options. One option is for the statement, and the other is against the statement.

One has two apply his intellect and choose the most appropriate option. By solving this type of argument-based question, one can be able to make wise decisions in real life.

Let us consider an example based on the statement and argument.

Statement: Should exams be conducted in the schools?

Argument 1: No, because it creates a burden on the child and pressurizes them to study.

Argument 2: Yes, because it will test the student’s knowledge.

Let us consider another example of the same.

Statement: Should a college or school reunion be held?

Argument 1: No, because it will create a political atmosphere.

Argument 2: Yes, because students are the future political leaders of the country.

The Exams in which these types of Questions are Asked

A few types of exams are listed below in which statement and inference type questions are asked:

  • Staff Selection Commission (SSC)
  • Combined Higher Secondary Level Exam (CHSL). This exam comes under the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) exam.
  • Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS)
  • State Bank of India Probationary Officer (SBI PO)
