What is a place value?

The quantity expressed by a numeral in a number based on its location within the number seems to be known as place value.

The value that each digit of a number represents is usually referred to as place value. Every digit that a number contains seems to have a value assigned to it depending on where it appears within the number system. Every number may contain two digits that seem similar yet have distinctive features; these features seem to be defined or determined by the said digit’s place or location in the number.

Operating on a base-ten system framework seems to be the standard form of representing numbers in mathematics. The integers 0-9 are represented by distinct characters that are called as numerals throughout this system of numbers. There is no special sign for the number ten or any other bigger number. There seems to be no single character for all of the numerous integers spanning in between 0 and 1. The decimal number system employs the digits 0 through 9, which are arranged using strings, with the values of each numeral amount determined by its position within the string system.

The quantity of a digit present in a number seems to be called its place value. The 8 in the hundreds place, for instance, indicates the worth of 8 being 800 in the number 897.

Types of Place value Chart:

Place value charts assist us in ensuring that the numbers are aligned correctly. A place value chart shows the proper placement of a digit in a number. To precisely determine the placement of digits and their quantities or worth of the distinct digits in a number, an individual first has to evaluate their location within a framework called the place value chart. The bigger numbers are usually broken into periods which are separated by commas which helps make the whole procedure a bit more efficient. Usually, people around the world are familiar with two types of place value charts:

  • Table of Indian place values.
  • International place value chart

The place value chart could assist individuals in measuring as well as assessing the place value of the given digits within all numbers ranging from zero to infinite. As we travel towards the left in a place value chart, the place value of a given digit gets increased by 10 times when assessed from right towards left and drops by ten times respectively from left to right.

In the subject of mathematics, the place value indicates the amount for each digit that is present within a number based on its placement in the number. These places begin at the position called units place, which is also referred to as one’s place. The places are categorised as Ones or units, tens and then hundreds, followed by thousands, ten thousands, and so on, continuing till infinity. These categories are mentioned in order from right to left.

Referring to the different ways the numbers are represented on both charts, we could use both International or Indian place value charts in various situations involving numbers. The Indian place value chart uses the patterns and guidelines for representing the numbers in the Indian numeral system, whereas the International place value chart uses the chart for representing the numbers in a way that is used internationally. The placement of characters that act as tools for separating place values are denoted by commas and these characters, which seem to be distinct place values, represent the fundamental differences between the Indian and International numeric systems.

Examples of place value:

Example1:

What is the place value of 9 in the number 96392?

Answer: A digit’s value seems to be defined by assessing where it stands in a given number; it can be in places like ones, tens, hundreds or other place values. Here in the given question, the place value of 9 in 96392 is 9 tens, which is represented as 9 x 10 or 90. As we can see, there are two 5’s in the number, and the other one represents the place value of 9 in 96392 as 9 times the thousand that is calculated as 9 x 10000 or 90,000.

Example 2:

What are the place values of all the numbers in the given figure 7649?

Answer: The place value of 9 is 9 as it is in one place, i.e. 9×1 = 9.

Following the same pattern:

Place value of 4 is 4x 10 = 40

Place value of 6 is 6x 100 = 600

Place value of 7 is 7x 1000 = 70000.

Conclusion:

This article takes the readers through the divisibility test and talks about how the divisibility rules work in the case of the divisibility test of 9. The article gives us unique examples regarding the divisibility process and mentions efficient and speedy ways for calculating the divisibility test of 9.
