What is place value?
It is a common question that churns the head of a student during the mathematics exam.
As the name says, a place value in the words of mathematics is the term that is used to describe the place of every digit that is present in a particular number given to us.
The order of the place or position of a number starts from left to right. The first position of the place or position of any number is counted as ones or units. Ones in a place value are also known as units. It is the starting place value of any number. It can’t be skipped in any form. To start counting a number, it is essential to count the number from left to right, and the first-place value described for any number remains as one in any number given to us.
The position of the digits from left to the right in a number is ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousand, lacs and so on given on the type of number.
What is place value? What is the meaning of place value?
Place value is the value of the numeric digit that is present in a given number, and depending on the position of the numeric digit, it could be said as ones/units, tens, hundreds, thousand, and so on as per the number of digits present in the given number to us.
For example, take a number say 46. The place value of 4 can be written as 4 ten or 40. But if the given number is 460, the place value of 4 becomes 4 hundred now or 400.
It is to be kept in mind that the digit asked could be the same, but its place value might be different as per the number asked.
Example: Write the place value of 464.
In the given example, the face value of 4 is 4 ones/units.
The place value of 6 is 6, ten or 60.
The place of 4 is 4 hundred or 400.
So, this is how we calculate the place value of a three-digit number so easily and quickly.
As there are two adopted ways of determining the place value, i.e., Indian place value and international place value chart, let’s have a look at both of them.
Place value charts
The place value charts are the charts that are designed to help one assign a correct place to any digit in a given number. Without the place value chart, it is all the more difficult to categorise the number in any category. It isn’t easy to classify them into hundreds, thousands and so on.
When big numbers are given, say, for instance, a 6-digit number is given, it is advised to divide them into periods with the help of the commas and assign them the face value.
The place value of a digit is determined with the help of two-place value charts:
- Indian place value chart
- International Place value chart
There is a difference between the Indian place value and the international place value chart because both of them follow different numeral systems.
The Indian place value chart follows the Indian numeral system, whereas the International Place value chart follows the international Place Value chart.
They also differ in the position of the commas that are put in a bigger number for easier assignment of the place value.
Indian place value chart
The Indian place value chart, as suggested, follows the Indian numeral system to determine the place value in a given number.
The commas, according to the Indian Place Value Chart, are assigned in order 3, 2 and 2.
This means that the counting of the digits starts from the right, and the first comma is put after 3 digits, then the second comma is put after two digits, and the third comma is put after 2 digits depending on the number given or asked about.
The digits in an Indian place value chart are grouped into periods of ones, tens, hundreds, thousand, lacs, ten lacs, and so on.
In a ten-digit number, the place value of the higher digit often goes into crores. For example, the number given is 5692. The place value for each number would be 5 thousand or 5000. Six hundred or 600. 9 ten or 90 and 2 units or 2.
International Place value chart
The International place value chart that is used all across the globe follows the International Numeral system.
The assignment of the place value differs in the name given to the digits. In comparison to the assignment of lacs in an Indian Place value chart, here, lacs are referred to as million. The assignment of the commas remains the same, starting from the right, and the first comma is put after 3 digits.
Conclusion
Both the place value charts are important depending on their usage. When asked about the place value as per the Indian place value chart, it is recommended to find it as per their rules and vice versa.
