The SDG urban index launched by Niti Aayog is the first edition of the SDG urban index and dashboard 2021- 22. This index is a progress recording or monitoring tool at the urban local body level that highlights the pros and cons, strengths and weaknesses, bridges, and gaps of the urban local body level data. The SDG index runs through both Indian urban cities and for the accountability of countries in the world.
The main goals of the SDG urban index and dashboard are procurement of good quality education and providing people with affordable and clean energy.

“SDG” stands for sustainable development goals.
The Niti Aayog of India has released the SDG urban index and dashboard 2021 which is the first edition in our country. This took place in collaboration with GIZ and BMZ under the Indo German development corporation.
Objective
The SDG Urban index and dashboard aims at providing good quality education and affordable and clean energy.
It will localise the sustainable development goals of different states, cities and countries by procuring records and monetary systems at different levels like national state and local levels.
Ranking of Urban Areas
The ranking of urban areas under the Niti Aayog urban index and dashboard for sustainable development goals provide a ranking for 56 urban areas in our country on 77 sustainable development goal indicators through all 46 targets comparing SDG framework.
Important Indicators
On one hand, the urban areas under the urban index and dashboard mean the urban local bodies of our country whereas in other cases the urban area refers to all the areas in a district. It is a collective measure of all urban areas in that district zone
The Scale of Ranking in The SDG Urban Index and Dashboard
The urban areas which is a part of the SDG urban index in the dashboard to be evaluated on a scale of 0 to 100 points
If an urban area has an implied score of 100 that means that the area has achieved all the targets that are set for the year 2030
Whereas urban area has scored a score of zero which means it is very far from changing targets among all the urban areas present in the list
Different Levels of Categorization Under The Dashboard
There are primarily 4 different categories: the aspirant category, the performer category, the front runners, and the achiever’s category. The aspirant category has a ranking between 0 to 49, the urban areas have a ranking point of 50 to 64 for performers, urban areas that have a bracket of 65 to 99 are front runners and the achiever’s category includes urban areas that have a perfect and full score of 100 which is not possible and has not been seen yet.
Key Performers
The top 10 urban areas include cities like Shimla, Coimbatore, Chandigarh, Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Panaji, Pune, Tiruchirappalli, Ahmedabad, and Nagpur.
The bottom 10 cities under the urban index and dashboard 2021 includes cities like Faridabad, Kolkata, Agra, Kohima, Jodhpur, Patna, Guwahati, Itanagar, Meerut and Dhanbad.
Aim of The Urban Index and Dashboard 2021
As the name stands SDG means sustainable development goals and the main aim of the SDG urban index and dash for 2021 is to provide quality education and affordable and clean resources to the people of different states listed under the list.
If you read the statistics 21 out of 56 urban areas are treating their solid waste generated by the city on a scale of 100%.
A least count of 9 in every 10 births of a newborn are institutional for all 37 out of 56 urban areas listed.
Out of all the 56 urban areas, 96.4% have a pupil-teacher equal to the ratio at the secondary level of less than 30 count
31 out of 56 areas are using clean cooking fuels which account for at least 9 out of every 10 people
Top Indicators Covered Under The Dashboard
There is a total of 77 indicators from all the 15 SDGs that cover areas of poverty reduction, health, providing good quality education, supporting women empowerment, bettering water and sanitation services, providing clean and affordable energy, supporting the economic growth, industry, and infrastructure, reduce inequalities in the society, help in urban development, take action against the climate crisis, forest, nutrition, and governance.
Conclusion
This is the Niti Aayog inaugural urban index and dashboard 2021 that aims at localization and monitoring different indicators covered under the scheme at the city level known as the urban local body. It performs and monitors the distance and weaknesses of cities at the ULB level by the system of monitoring and reporting. The dashboard is created to survey the gaps and to find solutions to bring the gap with the following sectors to create a balance in the ecosystem working environment of the cities in the country. The SDG urban index and dashboard will eventually help in strengthening cities and chart the future of better places of development in our country.
