5th Generation Mobile Network and India: Features, Applications and Challenges.

Table of Content
  •

5G Technology

  • The fifth era versatile network is known as 5G. 5G is the latest worldwide wireless standard in the industry, following 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G networks. 5G enables the development of a new network that links practically everything, including objects, machines, and gadgets
  • It is supposed that 5G wireless technology will bring more dependability, extremely low latency, massive network capacity, increased availability, higher multi-Gbps peak data speeds, and for a bigger number of people, a user experience that is more consistent .5G wireless technology is expected to deliver enhanced reliability, extremely low latency, vast network capacity, increased availability, faster multi-Gbps peak data speeds, and a more consistent user experience for a larger number of people
  • Increased performance and upgraded efficiency, empower new user experiences and connect new industries. Improved performance and efficiency, as well as innovative user experiences and industry connections

Features of 5G Technology

Some of the features of 5G technology are as follows:

  • Low latency: It enables real-time data access with very minimal delay. Note: Latency is a measure of delay. In a network, latency estimates the time taken for some data to reach its destination across the network.
  • Better flexibility in data delivery
  • Capacity: 100 times increase in traffic capacity and network efficiency
  • Speed: More than 1gbps
  • Spectrum usage: Usage of every bit of spectrum
  • Capability: Faster broadband, Internet of Things

Applications

Some of the applications of 5G technology are:

  • Developing smart infra and smart cities
  • Security of critical infra
  • Disaster management and weather forecasting
  • Tele-medicine and tele-education
  • Entertainment and multimedia
  • Promotion of Artificial Intelligence in daily life
  • Facilitation of Internet of Things
  • As per the OECD policy on digital Economic policy, 5G tech will increase GDP, create employment and digitize the economy.According to the OECD’s digital economic policy, 5G technology will boost GDP, create jobs, and digitize the economy
  • Agriculture: Improvement in the whole Value Chain, accuracy cultivating, brilliant water system, further developed soil and harvest observing
  • Manufacturing: Use of robots for accuracy producing, especially where people cannot perform because of security or exactness
  • Medical services: Effective telemedicine conveyance, tele-control of careful robots
  • Energy sector: Smart grids, smart metering Low latency communication is critical to managing grids after rising renewable and storage techs

Challenges in India for implementing 5G Technology

Some of the challenges that India is facing to implement and scale 5G Technology are:

  • Incompetent technological support in almost 80% of cell sites is causing high latency and limited capacity utilization of current spectrums like 4G
  • Replacement of existing phones with 5G phones is costlier. 5G modems are still not available on a wider scale due to the 5G spectrum’s low deployment. The cost burden falls on both mobile manufacturers and customers
  • Deployment of 5G infrastructure in India is also costly. It will require the upgradation of existing towers, skill development of the workforce. The companies will also be required to maintain 4G towers to support older devices. It will add extra cost to companies
  • Spectrum prices in India are one of the highest in India
  • With the deployment of 5G, India’s digital economy will get the push, but it will also increase the cybersecurity threat
  • Voices are being raised against the potential impact of electromagnetic fields on the health of humans, birds, and wildlife. Humans, birds, and wildlife are all concerned about the potential influence of electromagnetic fields on their health

Future of 5G in India

  • According to the Ericsson Mobility Report, 5G will account for around 26% of mobile subscriptions in India by 2026. In absolute terms, these numbers  would remain at around 33 Crore of 5G memberships. 4G memberships, on the other hand, are predicted to grow at a CAGR of 3%, from 68 Crore in 2020 to 83 crore in 2026, according to the report. According to the research, 4G memberships are expected to expand at a CAGR of 3% between 2020 and 2026, from 68 crore in 2020 to 83 crore in 2026
  • The suspicions in the report have come even as the nation presently cannot seem to observe the business dispatch of the 5G organization
  • In the 700MHz, 3.5GHz, and 26GHz bands, the Department of Telecommunications has made preliminary range allocations to Vodafone Idea, Bharti Airtel, and Reliance Jio
  • Following this allocation, Bharti Airtel launched its mid-band 5G testing network in Gurgaon Cyber Hub, using Ericsson 5G equipment, while Jio launched its own trial network in Mumbai, using indigenous 5G equipment

Conclusion

5G is a fifth-generation cellular technology that minimizes latency or the time it takes for a network to respond, in addition to enhancing download and upload speeds across a mobile network. Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be easier to integrate into our daily lives thanks to 5G. It will also help to facilitate the Internet of Things ecosystem (IoT). It will aid the country’s digital expansion, resulting in an increase in GDP and the creation of jobs.
