Union Territories in India

Union Territories of India is a set of five territories in India, to which the Constitution applies partially. They are not fully autonomous like the States.

India is taken as the seventh-largest country in the whole world. It has states, union territories, and provinces. There are 28 states and eight union territories in India. 

Each of India’s states and union territories has a unique history, culture, and language. The Union Territories of India are different from the states in terms of their size, geography, and economy. The people living in these areas also have distinct traditions and customs. 

The eight union territories of India are Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli & Daman, and Diu, Lakshadweep, National Capital Territory of Delhi, Puducherry, Ladakh and Jammu, and Kashmir.

The former state of Jammu & Kashmir was split into 2 Union Territories (UTs): J&K & Ladakh. A reorganisation legislation voted by Parliament on the 5th and 6th of August 2020 created the newly constituted union territories. India now has eight Union Territories.

Union Territories: A Historical Overview 

The portion оf аreаs mаnаged by the Сentre рredаtes the country’s indeрendenсe by severаl deсаdes. Сertаin regiоns were сlаssified аs scheduled distriсts in 1874, аnd they аre still in use tоdаy. Рrоvinсes оf the Сhief Соmmissiоners were estаblished in the 18th сentury аnd essentiаlly managed by а Chief Соmmissiоner whо reported direсtly tо the Governor General/Viceroy оf Indiа, аs the саse mаy be.

The Union territories were fоunded аs а result оf the Stаtes Reоrgаnisаtiоn Асt оf 1956. The Соnstitutiоn (Seventh Аmendment) Асt оf 1956 wаs the legislаtiоn thаt estаblished the соnсeрt оf the Union territory.

Difference between States and Union Territories

Each administrative unit inside the state does have its own elected government.The Central Government controls and administers the Union Territories, that are constituent subdivisions.
The Governor is indeed the Executive Authority.The President is perhaps the Executive Body.
The Centre has a federal link.All powers are concentrated in the leadership of Unions inside a unitary state.
The Chief Minister is in charge, as well as the people elect him.The Administrator, who is nominated by the President, is now in charge of the administration

The 8 Union Territories

1. Nicobar and Andaman islands

The islands’ land area is about 8,249 sq.km (3,185 sq mi). The region is broken into 3 districts: the Nicobar District, which is centred in Car Nicobar, the Southern Andaman District, which is centred in Port Blair, and indeed the North & Middle Andaman District, which is centred in Mayabunder.

The British established a colony inside the Nicobar & Andaman Islands in 1789. The British abandoned this island in 1796, although in the 19th century, they reclaimed control of the Andamans.

The majority of people communicate Hindi or Bengali, although Tamil, Telugu, & Malayalam also are widely spoken. The Andamanese, the indigenous people of Andaman Islands, used to be tiny, isolated communities that spoke several varieties of the Andamanese language.

The Capital Region Territory in Delhi spans 1,484 kilometres Square  (573 sq mi), with 783 km2 (302 sq mi) defined as rural with 700 km2 (270 sq mi) designated as urban, making this the country’s largest metropolis. It measures 51.9 kilometres (32 miles) in length & 48.48 kilometres in breadth (30 mi).

Delhi’s present metropolitan area population is 32,066,000 through 2022.

In Dec 1911, George V of the United Kingdom directed that the capital of British India be relocated from Calcutta (now Kolkata) to Delhi.

The most widely heard language in Delhi is Hindi.

3. Jammu and Kashmir

Together with Dogri, Hindi, Urdu, & English, Kashmiri is indeed a primary language of Jammu & Kashmir.

4. Ladakh

The population of Ladakh is expected to reach 292 thousands (2.92 lakhs) in 2022.

The district of Ladakh was separated into two regions in 1979: Leh & Kargil. These districts eventually became the Ladakh union of states, which was established by the Indian government in 2019.

Lehskat is named for Leh, in which it is heard; Shamskat is spoken northwest of Ladakh; Stotskat being spoken in Indus river valley and also is tonal, unlike others; & Nubra is spoken north of Leh.

5. Lakshadweep

Gujarati is by far the most frequently spoken and also most generally spoken language inside this region. The original works are written in English. Even now in remote places, the great majority of people understand Hindi.

In 2020, the population of Puducherry’s metro region was 836,000, up 2.45 percent from 2019. In 2019, the populace of Puducherry’s metro region was 816,000, up 2.51% since 2018.

On Aug. 16, 1962, the 4 enclaves of Pondicherry formed a union territory when the instrument of ratification was signed. In 2006, the area was given the name Puducherry.

Tamil should be utilized for all and any legal purposes inside the Union Territory, although Malayalam & Telugu could be used within Mahé & Yanam, accordingly. The Act also states that English could be adopted in any of the Union territory’s official purposes.

The largest union territory of India

Andaman and Nicobar Island is the Largest union territory of India and the largest and most centrally located of the Nicobar Islands.Placed in the Eastern and Northern parts of the Bay of Bengal, Andaman Island is the main island, most prominent among the 326 islands that form this Union territory.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands are well remembered for their scenic beauty with dense forests, ancient jungles, blue waters, white-sand beaches, and lovely coral reefs. Nicobar islands are home to diverse flora and fauna.

The political district comprises two parts: the Andaman Islands, an archipelago consisting of 231 islands including North Sentinel Island, and the Nicobar Islands, a chain of 18 islands to the south.

The largest city in the territory is Port Blair, on South Andaman Island. The capital of the union territory is also located on this island. The Central government of India administers the territory.

The total population per the 2011 census was 379,944, making it the second least populated Union Territory after Lakshadweep. This comprises 226,000 people on Andaman and 153,000 people on the Nicobar Islands. As per 2013 estimates, the total population has increased to 4 lakhs approximately.

The Government of India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands Administration has divided the administration into seven districts, with the largest district by several islands being South Andaman. A District Magistrate subordinate administrates the islands to the Indian Administrative Service.

The largest Union Territory of India, Andaman, and Nicobar’s economy depends mainly on tourism, agriculture, fishing industry, and natural resources.

The smallest union territory of India

Lakshadweep Island is located in the Laccadive Sea and is part of the Lakshadweep archipelago. Lakshadweep is the union territory of India, consisting of 36 islands, out of which only ten are inhabited. The main reason for Lakshadweep being uninhabited was the lack of drinking water facilities. They are now used with the help of WAPCOS Limited earlier known as Water and Power Consultancy Services (India) Limited is an Indian multinational government undertaking and consultancy firm wholly owned by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India, which has managed these areas with different water treatments. The smallest island in Lakshadweep is Lakshadweep, with just 1.5 sq km. 

The Lakshadweep Union Territory administration is headed by the Administrator appointed by the Central government of India. The Administrator is serviced by a Deputy Administrator and other supporting staff. The headquarters of the Lakshadweep Union Territory is located at Kavaratti on the island of Kavaratti.

The Lakshadweep Union Territory has a total land area of around 32 sq km, out of which 30 sq km is covered by islands and two sq km are coral reefs. The total population of the Lakshadweep Union Territory as per the 2011 census was around 64,429. Of these, males constituted 50% of the people, and females comprised 50%. The literacy rate in Lakshadweep stood at 92.

Lakshadweep Island is taken as the smallest union territory of India in terms of population and area. It is about 30 sq km in size, while its population is less than 100 people. 

The smallest island of Lakshadweep in India, Lakshadweep Islands, has an area of just 1.5 sq km. The majority of this hundred substantial population resides on Minicoy, around 80 sq km.

Union territories hаs сhаnged throughout time, tаking intо соnsiderаtiоn geоgrарhy аnd оther strаtegiс аsрeсts. The direсt соntrоl оf the Uniоn Gоvernment will be benefiсiаl tо the sосiо-роlitiсаl аnd eсоnоmiс grоwth оf the Union territories.
