Sawai Jai Singh

Sawai Jai Singh was a profound ruler of the Rajputana period and was formerly known as Maharaja of Amber kingdom, the founder of the royal city of Jaipur.

Sawai Jai Singh was a Rajput ruler of Amber, which is later known as Jaipur. He was also born in Amber on 3rd November 1688 and at the age of 11, he became the king of Amber after his father’s death. In 1699, he was honoured by the last powerful Mughal emperor Aurangzeb with the title of Sawai which refers to the superior of his contemporary period. The capital city of Amber during the period of Sawai Jai Singh was in Kachwaha and after 1727, the capital city was transferred to Jainagara, which is now known as Jaipur city and was located more than nine kilometres southwest of Amber.

  • From a young age, the Rajput ruler Sawai Jai Singh had a great interest in the social and political conflict of the different states of the British India Region
  • Sawai Jai Singh was very bright in war culture and he was also very wise in the context of social and political issues
  • Jagannatha, his astronomer, immensely influenced the ruler and he established Jantar Mantar in Jaipur to his suggestions
  • At the beginning of the seventeenth century, Sawai Jai Singh visualized that the European astronomers had used telescopes for observing the movement of stars and planets
  • He believed in the naked eye observation concept and according to this concept, the natural observational phenomena were the basic instinct of culture that also enhanced the cultural standard of the region
  • Sawai Jai Singh invited famous foreign astronomers for discussion and his region was politically stable with a good relationship with surrounding rulers as well as British rulers
  • Sawai Jai Singh has made a great contribution to the field of architecture, mathematics, and astrology
  • Before him, the astrological concept was not popular in the British India Region and it was not incorporated for business in any architectural construction

Various Observatories established by Sawai Jai Singh

Various Observatories established by Sawai Jai Singh during his period and in the late eighteenth century, he established five major observatories, particularly in the northern part of the British India Region. Jantar Mantar, which is now in New Delhi, was the most important observatory that was built by Sawai Jai Singh. An architectural intelligence was established in different parts of India in reference to this architecture. Sawai Jai Singh, whose basic part was built by Rajput ruler Raja Man Singh, built the additional part of the Amer fort. Vedhshala in the city of Jaipur and Ujjain was also built by Sawai Jai Singh in the year 1719. Sawai Jai Singh built most of the observatories from the perspective of different astronomical skills as well as with the assistance of cosmological concepts.

Sawai Jai Singh Jantar Mantar

In the context of Sawai Jai Singh Jantar Mantar, Jantar Mantar primarily located in New Delhi consists of 13 different architectural instruments related to astronomical perspectives. A total of five Jantar Mantar were established by Sawai Jai Singh between the period of 1724 to 1735 in New Delhi, Jaipur, and Ujjain. Other Jantar Mantars are situated in Mathura as well as Varanasi. The principal reason for building this observatory was to make an accumulation of different astronomical tables that is very helpful for the prediction of time as well as the movement of different astronomical bodies like solar and lunar position along with the movement of other planets. Jantar Mantar consisted of 20 different fixed instruments in context to astronomical observation. Jantar Mantar was entirely built with high astronomical skills along with various cosmological concepts that were also seen in different architectures of the Mughal period. “Ptolemaic positional astronomy” was the basic concept of building the Jantar Mantar 

Conclusion 

The Rajput ruler Sawai Jai Singh became one of the most powerful rulers of his contemporary period with the assistance of the Mughal emperor. In the year 1701, he captured the Vishalgarh fort from the Maratha ruler, and in 1712 the Vishalgarh fort was officially recognized as the Imperial Edict of the Rajput ruler Sawai Jai Singh. The Rajput ruler Sawai Jai Singh was fond of different literary forms like architecture, literature, paintings, and astronomy as well. He had a great affection for Mathematics.

Answer: Sawai Jai Singh was important in Indian history because he was the pioneer to incorporate different astrological perspectives into Indian culture. During his reign science, literature and architecture grew immensely. Samrat Yantra was another important observatory built by Sawai Jai Singh that was completed in the year 1734 and it is now considered the largest Sundial made of stone. This observatory is now honoured by the Heritage site of UNESCO.

He was killed in the battle of Saraighat which was located far away from Assam. Sandial was also invented by this king that was located in Jaipur. The troop of Marathas defeated the army of Sawai Jai Singh with the assistance of innovative technological advancements that were unknown to Sawai Jai Singh.

He arranged a meeting in 1734 that was formerly called the Hurda Conference that aimed to make unity among various forces of Rajput tribes and check the emergence of invasions of foreigners into the British India Region.
