Overview of Mode

What is Mode?

The value that appears the most frequently is called the “mode”. The list has no mode if no number in the list is repeated.

What are the three different types of modes?

The three types of modes are Bimodal, Trimodal, and Multimodal.

Brief Explanation of three types of mode

  1. Bimodal – When a data set contains two modes, it is referred to as bimodal.
  2. Trimodal – When a data set contains three modes, it is referred to as trimodal.
  3. Multimodal – When a data set contains four or more modalities, it is referred to as multimodal.

Finding the Mode 

In a dataset, the mode is the most common data point. When a dataset contains a large number of repeated values, the mode comes in handy. In a dataset, there can be no mode, one mode, or numerous modes.

Example 1 (with formula) 

Mrs. Gina asked students in her class how many siblings they each had.

Find the mode of the data given below:

0,0,1,1,1,1,1,2,2,2,4,4

Now, let us look for the values that occur the most, that is,

0, , 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 4, 

As we can see, there is a tie for the value that occurs the most often, 

Hence, the modes are 1 and 2 siblings. 

Example 2 (with formula)

Mr. James asked the students in his class how many siblings they each had.

Find the mode of the data given below:

0,0,0,1,1,1,1,1,1,2,2

Now, as a rule, let us look for the values that occur the most, that is, 

0, 0, 0, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2

Hence, the mode is 1 sibling. 

The function of Mode in Statistics 

Statistics is the study of how facts and information are presented, collected, and analyzed for a specific purpose. Tables, graphs, pie charts, bar graphs, pictorial representations, and other visual aids are used. After the data has been properly organized, it must be further processed in order to derive useful information.

In statistics, we typically represent a set of data by a representative value that roughly characterizes the full data collection for this purpose. The measure of central tendency is the name given to this representative value. It is implied by the term that it is a value that the data is centered on. We may generate a statistical summary of the enormous, ordered data using these metrics of central tendency. The mode of data is one such measure of central tendency. 

Use of Mode

When looking at categorical data, such as automobile models or soda varieties, where a mathematical average median value based on order cannot be determined, the mode is the most helpful metric of central tendency.

Importance of Mode in Statistics 

The mode is the value that appears the most frequently in a dataset.

A dataset can have no mode, one mode, or numerous modes (if no value repeats).

The mode is significant in statistics for the following reasons:

  1. It tells us which values are the most common in a dataset.
  2. When the mean and median can’t be calculated, it’s useful for finding the most often occurring value in categorical data.
  3. Although the median and mean are more typically employed, it offers us an indication of where the “center” of a dataset is located.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Mode

Advantages

  1. The mode is simple to grasp and compute.
  2. Extreme values have no effect on the mode.
  3. In a data collection and a discrete frequency distribution, the mode is easy to spot.
  4. For qualitative data, the method is useful.
  5. An open-ended frequency table can be used to calculate the mode.
  6. Graphically, the mode can be located. 

Disadvantages

  1. When there are no repeats in a data set, the mode is not determined.
  2. The mode does not depend on every single value.
  3. When the data consists of a tiny number of values, the mode becomes unstable.
  4. Data can have only one mode, multiple modes, or no mode at all.
