International Day of Older Persons

The global population of people under the older category increases with good growth. Here we will discuss the international day of older persons.

Every year on the first of October, the International Day of older people is celebrated worldwide. It was established by the United Nations General assembly on 14 December 1990. It was also recorded in 45/106 resolution. The first-ever holiday for the International Day of older people was observed on 1 October 1991. People tend to celebrate this international day for the elderly holiday to raise awareness about all the issues affecting the older people, including elder abuse and senescence.  In addition, it is also celebrated to appreciate all the contributions that the elders make to society. There is always something different observed on this particular day in all the years. The theme of the International Day for older people has been observed since 1998. Every year, a different team is established and is tried to achieve as well. 

The Theme of the International Day for Older of 2021

The theme of the International Day for older people for the year 2021 was named to be Digital Equity for All Ages. The name of the International Day of Older Persons 2021 became this as it was the theme for the 202 commemorations. This theme affirms a need for meaningful participation and access in the world of digital by the older people of the world. Sustainable development goals, also known as SDGs and the 2030 schedule, also recognise that development in the world can only be achieved if all ages are included. So empowering all the older people in the world of development, which includes promoting their active participation in political, social, and economic life, is one of the best ways to ensure that there is less inequality and much inclusiveness towards the development of the digital world.

Aim of the Theme of the International Day for older people of 2021

The theme of the International Day for older people of 2021 aims for the following things:

  • To make people aware of The importance of inclusion of older people in the digital world. This can be done by tackling prejudice, discrimination, and stereotypes associated with the process of digitalisation.
  • Ensure that the policies like leveraging digital technologies are highlighted to achieve full sustainable development goals.
  • To explore all the roles of legal frameworks and policies to ensure that older people’s privacy and safety are maintained in the digital world. 
  • To make sure that the requirement of legally binding instruments is highlighted for older people’s rights. 
  • The final aim is to address private and public interests related to connectivity, affordability, availability, design, innovation, infrastructure, and capacity building.

The International Day for the elderly has become very important to make sure that we appreciate all the contributions and sacrifices that older people have given to society. In addition to it, it also allows us to understand all the serious effects that we were causing to them because of issues like elder abuse. This particular holiday is celebrated in many countries, and it is also celebrated with different names as well. The name of the International Day of older persons 2021 was given a theme of digital equity for all ages. It was done to ensure that all the older people knew the digital world.
