Officially India is often called the Republic of India. India’s political map consists of 8 union territories along with twenty-eight states. India is the second most populated country in the world. It is also considered the largest democracy in the world. The coastline of the country is measured to be of the length of 7,517 km in length. Of this 7,517km, 5,423 km of coastline is present in peninsular India whereas 2,094 km of coastline is present in the islands of Andaman Nicobar and Lakshadweep. Moreover, the naval hydrographic charts of India show coastline on the mainland consists of 36 percent of mudflats, 43 percent of sandy beaches, 10 percent of marshy shores along with 11 percent of rocky shores. Broadly, India is principally classified into 6 main zones. These zones are Western India, Southern India, Eastern India, Central India, Northeastern India, and Northern India.
Jammu and Kashmir reorganization Act of 2019
The Jammu and Kashmir reorganization act was passed recently. The key points of this act have been outlined in the following.
- The Reorganization Bill for Jammu and Kashmir was introduced on August 5 of 2019 within the Rajya Sabha.
- Both the parliament houses gave their assent to the bill. As a result, the number of Union Territories, as well as states in India, has gone through some significant changes.
- The main purpose of the bill was to bifurcate the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir into two separate Union territories. The first one among the two separate union territories that were formed is the union territory of Ladakh whereas the second one is the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
- Presently India consists of a total of eight Union territories whereas the total number of states in the country is 28. In this context, it should be mentioned that Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli were merged. The merger of the two came into effect on January 26 of 2020.

- The Police along with the law and order will be directly controlled by the center. But it should be mentioned that the land there will be under the control of the government that will be eventually elected there.
