What defines a City?

It isn’t easy to statistically define a city, despite the consensus that cities are densely populated areas. According to the definition of a city proper, the legal boundaries of a city and the surrounding urban areas and those communities where many people commute to work constitute a metropolitan region. As long as the population is 50,000, it is regarded as a “legitimate city.” According to the United Nations, nearly two-thirds of the global population lives in cities. Because of this, it is anticipated to reach 60% by 2030. Some 23% of the population lives within a large city, while 7% live in a megacity with a population of more than 10 million. Megacities are defined as having at least 10 million residents.
