Sports Term of Polo

Polo began as a cavalry training game, generally for the king's guard or other elite troops. Polo eventually became a Persian national sport, with the nobles playing it widely.

Polo is a Central Asian sport that was first played in Persia (Iran) somewhere between the 6th and 1st centuries BC. Polo began as a cavalry training game, generally for the king’s guard or other elite troops. It was a little combat to the warlike tribesmen who played it with as many as 100 on each side.

Polo eventually became a Persian national sport, with the nobles playing it widely. The queen and her ladies engaged King Khosrow II Parvz and his courtiers in the 6th century AD, indicating that the game was played by both men and women. The game moved from Persia to Arabia, then to Tibet (the English term polo comes from the Balti word polo).

The first international polo competition took place in 1886, when the United States completed unsuccessfully for the Westchester Cup against the English, who were at the time the uncontested world champions. In 1902, England successfully defended the Cup, but the United States won in 1909. Except for 1914, the Cup was contested nine more times (the latest in 1939), with the Americans winning each time. The next international competition took place in 1971.

Polo game in India

The modern game of polo originated in India.  Polo as we know it now originated in Manipur, where it was known as ‘Sagol Kangjei,’ ‘Kanjai-bazee,’ or ‘Pulu.’  It was the anglicised form of the last, which referred to the wooden ball used, that was adopted by the sport during its sluggish introduction to the west.

Qutubuddin Aibak, a Turkic slave from Central Asia who subsequently became the Sultan of Delhi, ruled for barely four years, from 1206 to 1210, when his horse slipped and he was impaled on the pommel of his saddle during a game of polo at Lahore (now Pakistan). Mughal monarchs were also fans of the sport, which they dubbed Chaugan. Emperor Akbar established a set of official rules for the sport.

The game’s beginnings in Manipur can be traced back to early Sagol Kangjei predecessors. Field hockey (named Khong Kangjei) and wrestling-hockey were the other two types of hockey played in Manipur (called Mukna Kangjei).
