Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was honoured with the Bharat Ratna. The Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum (VITM) was founded in Bangalore, India, as a constituent institution of the Indian Ministry of Culture’s National Council of Science Museums. Visvesvaraya is credited with developing the block system, which consists of automated doors that close water spills. The floodgates he built and patented were first put in the Khadakwasla reservoir in Pune in 1903. Sir. M. Vishweshwaraiah famously declared, “Industrialise or perish.” In Mysore state, he founded the sandalwood factory. The first Indian civil engineer was Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. On September 15, India celebrates Engineer’s Day on its birthday. He was a Bharat Ratna Awardee who established schools and engineering institutes, devised block irrigation, and constructed the KRS reservoir. Engineers Day 2021 will be the scholar’s 160th birthday.
On September 15, India commemorates Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, the country’s most outstanding engineer. Visvesvaraya, often known as Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, is a brilliant Indian civil engineer well-known for his accomplishments. Many people like his thoughts, vision, and manner of thinking.
The Krishnarajasagara Dam
The Krishnarajasagar dam is the most prominent landmark in Mysore. This dam isn’t just a popular tourist attraction. It also relies on large portions of Karnataka for irrigation and drinking water. The barrier is closely linked to Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, the erstwhile king of Mysore when this dam was built, and the dam’s designer and engineer, Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya.
The project was unparalleled in India and worldwide at its development and completion, and dam construction was a relatively new activity. The Krishnarajasagara dam project was approved after a year of planning and political, technical, and financial negotiations with all parties concerned.
He had studied the work of engineers in the area and devised a design for the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam. It is a magnificent structure that attracts thousands of visitors every day.
When the KRS Dam was erected in 1912, it provided power to the Kolar Gold Fields; it featured a roughly 3-kilometre tunnel excavated through a hill range. It led to sugarcane production, resulting in significant sugar mills in the region; it was India’s largest dam.
Government Engineering College (now University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering) in Bengaluru was one of the institutions that Sir MV helped establish. The University of Agricultural Sciences was founded due to the Hebbal Agricultural School.
Visvesvaraya of Mysore University travelled to several countries to visit companies and large construction projects to offer his services and explore how he could help India flourish. He believed that the best way to alleviate India’s poverty was for everyone to access education and work. The Mysore Sandal Oil Factory and the Mysore Soap Factory are in India. Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya made a few notable contributions. Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya’s efforts as an engineer and administrator will serve as an inspiration to future generations. He was an engineer who, in 1934, devised a blueprint for the Indian economy. For his outstanding contributions to engineering and education, he was awarded the Bharath Ratna, Independent India’s highest honour, in 1955.
Mokshagundam Visheshwaraya’s Work
In 1906-07, the Government of India sent him to Aden to research water supply and drainage systems due to the popularity of his work. He did so, and based on his research, he created a project implemented in Aden. Sir MV was granted Honorary Membership of the London Institution of Civil Engineers for 50 years. He has held the position of Diwan of the State of Mysore. Sir M V was the Chief Engineer of the Mysore Kingdom in 1909 and, for seven years, the Diwan of the princely kingdom of Mysore. As the Diwan, he contributed to the state’s overall development. As the Diwan, he contributed to the state’s overall development. He also inaugurated several new railway lines in the form of Mysore. In 1895, Sir Mokshagundam Visheshwaraya developed and built the waterworks for the Municipality of Sukkur. He also invented the Block System, which prevents dams from wasting water. Visvesvaraya was appointed as Dewan by the Maharaja in 1912. He did not want a high office, but he was eager to have the opportunity to expand technical education and industry in the state. The Maharaja, however, insisted, and Visvesvaraya was appointed Dewan.

Every year on Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya’s birthday, National Engineers Day is observed. Apart from India, Sri Lanka and Tanzania also commemorate the pioneer engineer’s contributions on this day. Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya is renowned as the builder of modern India, a visionary, scholar, planner, politician, and respected engineer. Sir MV bequeathed traits of courage, patience, and forethought to subsequent generations after spending his entire life working tirelessly, giving speeches on various topics, and publishing books. On his 100th birthday, he said Death called on me long ago but found me not at home and walked away. On the other hand, Sir MV peacefully left the world on April 12, 1962.
