Major Sea Ports of India

In this article we are going to take a look at all the major sea ports in India, especially the new Mangalore Sea port in Karnataka and the Mormugao Sea port of Panaji in goa.

As the largest peninsula in the world, India has a coastline that spans 7516.6 kilometres. India’s marine trade represents 95% of total trade in terms of volume and 68% of total trade value, according to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. There are 13 large ports (12 controlled by the government and one by a private company) and 187 minor and intermediate ports that have been notified to serve it. Port Blair, which had been designated as a significant port in 2010 but had recently been demoted, has now been stripped of that distinction. Maharashtra (53), Gujarat (40), Tamil Nadu (15), Karnataka (10), and other states are home to the majority of the country’s major and minor ports 82. The Sagarmala project, which was launched in 2015, and the National Maritime Development Program are two initiatives by the Indian government to upgrade India’s ports and related infrastructure.

Major sea ports in India

As of now, India has 13 major seaports, 12 of which are government-owned and one of which, Ennore port of Chennai, is privately owned. There are nine coastal Indian states in which they can be found (Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, and West Bengal). Mumbai is the country’s most important natural port. The federal structure of Indian governance mandates that the central and state governments share responsibility for maritime transportation. There are nine coastal states in India where the central government’s shipping ministry is responsible for the administration of the main ports, while the nine coastal states are responsible for the administration of minor and intermediate ports. Minor and intermediate ports have been prioritised by governments to be built in a stepwise way with a significant number of them including public–private cooperation.

Seventy-four percent of cargo moved through the world’s busiest ports in 2007. However, private sector participation in ports has expanded in recent years, except for Kamarajar Port Limited, which is run by the government. India’s government owns seven shipyards, two are held by state governments, and 19 privately owned shipyards are in operation.

Mangalore sea port

It is situated at the confluence of the Gurupura River and the Arabian Sea in Panambur, Karnataka. On the north bank of the Gurupura River. The port’s beginnings were modest, with the construction of a few berths for small ships. The port, on the other hand, underwent an expansion after the fourth five-year period to accommodate larger ships as well. It has been created around this southern Karnataka port to aid in the management of nearby businesses.

Tea, coffee, oil, fish, rubber, crude oil, fertilisers, etc. are some of the most commonly transported items in this area. It’s a small, weathered port in deep water.

The iron ore exports are handled here. Karnataka’s lone significant port is located there. Its moniker, “New Mangalore Port,” separates it from the old Mangalore Bunder or “Old Bunder” in Mangalore city. The old harbour is located to the south of the New Mangalore port and is currently utilised for fishing and the transportation of small commodities.

Mormugao sea port

A major iron ore exporter, Mormugao, is located in Alto Desterro in southern Goa. Tourism draws people to the port. It’s one of India’s oldest ports. This port’s fame has soared since the completion of the Konkan Railway.

There are many commodities that are commonly transported, such as iron ores, coconuts, manganese, cotton, and many other nuts. It is one of India’s most tranquil and relaxing ports. Goa, a state on India’s west coast, is home to this port. One of India’s oldest ports, it was built in 1885 on the site of a natural harbour. Around 2,600 people are employed by the port, while around 4,000 people are on the pension rolls.

Because it is the main employer in the Vasco region, Mormugao Port Trust has built a mini-township in Headland Sada for its employees, which includes a school district, housing developments, and other services (such as a hospital).

Conclusion

There are three oceans that encircle India: the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea, and the Indian Ocean. In addition to facilitating trade and travel, ports serve as vital hubs of commerce. The city’s (location’s) economy grows because of the city’s (location’s) ports. It is estimated that India has 13 major seaports and more than two hundred designated minor and intermediate ports. There are two names for what was once Bombay Port Trust. Today it is the Mumbai Port Trust and Mumbai Harbor, and it is India’s largest natural port. Mumbai Port is India’s largest natural port, followed by Cochin Port. The length of India’s coastline exceeds 7000 kilometers. 74% of India’s cargo was handled by the country’s major ports in 2007.
