Growth of Self-Help Groups in India

The SHGs financial inclusion has helped in lessening maternal wellness and child mortality. Also, it has helped the poor to fight diseases because they now have better nutrition, housing, and health facilities. This is especially true for women and also children.

Why Are SHGs Needed?

The most important reason why there is so much poverty, especially in the country’s rural areas, is no access to be able to get credit and other financial services.

A committee was constituted with Dr C Rangarajan as the chairman, who made a comprehensive report on the financial inclusions in our country. According to this report, he recognised four major reasons for the lack of monetary inclusions, and those reasons are:

  1. Inability to give collateral security.
  2. Poor capability to absorb credit.
  3. Weakened community networks.
  4. Inadequate institution reach.

When sound community networks are built in villages, the villages are identified as crucial elements, especially where credit linkage is considered in the country’s rural parts.

They then get credit access. Therefore, it plays a vital role in helping to curb poverty. Assistance is also provided in creating social capital for the women and the needy. This helps empower women, and also it lends them the power to voice their opinion, which is important for women to progress in today’s society.

When people are self-employed, it gives them financial independence. There are several other advantages other than this, like the medical facilities improve, the levels of literacy become better. Not just this, people consider family planning to be an important part of progress as well.

Conclusion:

SHGs are substantially helping in improving the poor and marginalised sections’ economic plight. These groups rely on self-help, and they encourage alleviating unemployment and poverty. It helps build the operational capacity as the poor will be able to generate income with the help of self-employment. It helps in finding resolutions for different conflicts because of the collective leadership of these groups and because they get the opportunity to have a mutual discussion.

The poor and needy get collateral-free credit, and the members of the SHGs decide the terms and ensure that they get a market-driven and reasonable rate. They work together to make sure that the money they borrow from these organisations is given reasonably. It also helps the poor work towards saving money for which they earn an interest amount. It will help them to commence a small-time enterprise.
