Salient Features of Important Acts that transformed India
There are many landmark Acts enacted by the government. Some of them and their features are mentioned below:
The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006
This Act was formed to prohibit Child Marriage. To eradicate child marriage, the Indian Govt. in 2006 implemented the Prevention of Child Marriage Act. This Act replaced the earlier legislation of the Child Marriage Restraint Act, 1929. This new Act is more potent because it has provisions to prevent child marriage and protect a victim if any. The punishment for helping promote or perform child marriage has also increased.Â
The Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961
The Dowry Prohibition Act, enacted on May 1, 1961, was another landmark decision by the Government of India. This Act aimed to prevent demanding or giving of dowry. Under this Act, either party’s property, money, and material goods exchanged were termed dowry. Similar benefits provided to the marriage by relatives or friends were also termed this.
The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019
Although the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019 came late, it brought relief to married Muslim women. It protected their rights and prohibited divorce by the husbands simply by pronouncing talaq thrice. This is the tradition of triple talaq. This Act also ensured subsistence allowance and custody of minor children to the mother.Â
The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009
Enacted on August 4, 2009, this Act laid stress on the importance of compulsory and free education for children. Under Article 21 A of the Indian Constitution, education became a fundamental right of every child in the country after the Act came into force on April 1, 2010. This ensured that all children in the age group of 6 to 18 years would be able to complete their elementary education.
The Right to Information Act, 2005
The Right to Information Act ensures that citizens get a timely response to their demands for government information. The Department of Personnel and Training, Ministry of Personnel Public Grievances and Pensions, have provided an RTI portal gateway to this end. The objective of this Act is to bring transparency and accountability to the functioning of the government to prevent corruption and empower the citizens.Â
