Presence of Mountain in Earth’s Mantle

This article will be about the new research which has shown up about the earth’s mantle and it will totally change the earth’s outer and inner core concept.

Presence Of Mountain In Earth’s Mantle

We all have studied about earth’s outer and inner core which used to help in understanding how the planet earth was formed. But now a study is coming up where the study shows that there is a mountain which exists in the top layer of the earth which is located under 660 km downward in the earth which is actually separating the upper and lower mantle of the earth. The theory is also coming up that Mountains stabilise the earth. Now scientists are working on it to get the result of this theory. Right now scientists are calling this layer the “660 Km Boundary”.

What do scientists have to say?

Most children have learnt in school that the earth is having crust, mantle and core layers which are also helping in subdividing the layers into inner and outer cores. However, this study is not wrong but there is a new identified layer coming up as per the research of scientists. It is claimed that there are mountains inside the earth’s core and these mountains stabilise the earth.

The study that is published in the journal science is that scientists have used the data from Bolivia’s earthquake. Scientists have discovered massive mountains in the Earth’s mantle during this data collection and they have found that the 660 kilometres downward layer is empty; it is separating the lower and upper mantle.

So far scientists haven’t given an official name to this layer but right now they are calling it a 660-km boundary.

The Institute of Geodesy and Geophysics and Princeton University scientists have used the powerful waves inside the earth which are basically generated by a massive earthquake. The data here shows that the shockwaves which were sent out in every direction came out to be travelling through the earth’s core and going to some other side of the earth and after that, they came back. Now mountains stabilise the earth, we can get a little evidence here that most probably Scientists have discovered massive mountains in the Earth’s mantle.

Results that shocked the scientists as well

Scientists have used powerful technology-based computers to know the behaviour of waves inside the earth’s core/mantle. This technology completely depends on the wave’s behaviour which involves its bending and bouncing back.  It is almost like light waves which reflect back when you wave to show the light to the mirror.

Here earthquake waves travel directly in a straight line through the rocks (homogeneous rocks) and when these waves encounter any kind of boundary or roughness they just refract or reflect. Now here the thing is the waves which are pointing towards the theory of mountains stabilising the earth can be proved but there is no proper monitoring yet still.

Wenbo Wu who was present at Princeton during the time of this study said that every object has its surface roughness so does scatter light. This is the reason they are able to see objects and also these scattering waves are carrying the information related to the roughness of the surface.

The complete shock came up when they got to monitor the roughness of that surface layer. It is even rougher than the earth’s surface where we all are living. There is an indication that these Rocky Mountains stabilise the earth which is present under the earth 660 km straight.

Conclusion

So far there is no statistical model made but there are surely chances that these mountains are much bigger than anything as compared to the earth’s surface. When researchers tried to examine the 410 km distance of the surface downward they found nothing much and there was no evidence of a similar hard surface but they called it the transition zone. Now researchers have found that layer which is not easy to observe when you are on the surface of the earth. But there will surely be a question on whether these Mountains stabilise the earth or not.
