For the purpose that countries realize and work on climate change, we have a climate change performance index (CCPI). What is the climate change performance Index? What are The Climate Change Performance Index and its purpose-

The report helps in having transparency in climate politics of the international realm and helps countries to compare the efforts and the progress of other individual countries in respect of climate change.

Now coming onto the answer of what is the climate change performance index, we can define it as a scoring index of a system that ranks countries in their efforts for climate change. The design of CCPI was by a development organization called Germanwatch, which was located in Germany. The organization publishes the rank and results along with the climate action network international along with the new climate institute, and they get their financial support from Barthel Foundation.

After discussing what is the climate change performance index, it is time to discuss the rank of India. In the latest results of global climate change, the performance index India is ranked 10th for the consecutive year this time. China is in the 33rd rank as the biggest emitter of greenhouse gases (GHG). The USA, known as the largest polluter, is at the bottom of the list. In 2019 India was ranked at 9th position, and though it slipped one rank in this year’s index, the journey of India in climate protection is consistent as it jumped from 31st position in 2014 to 10th in 2021.

Now you have learned about “What is India’s rank in Climate Change Performance Index”

Key aspects of the Climate Change Performance Index

It was in the year 2015 that CCPI decided to change its previous methodology of calculating climate index. The CCPI revised and adopted a new methodology of climate policy that was based on the Paris Agreement of the year 2015. Under this new method, the climate change performance index was stretched, and it was to include the index of the progress of the countries in National Determined Contributions (NDCs) along with the target of 2030 countries. The performance of a country is based on four major categories that are-

  • Climate Policy
  • GHG Emissions
  • Energy Use
  • Renewable Energy

Among the above mentioned four categories, three of them, namely “Energy Use”, “GHG Emissions”, and “renewable energy”, are defined by equally weighted indicators that are four in number. Four indicators are as follows—

  • Current Level
  • Recent developments (5 years)
  • Compatibility of current performance at 2 degrees Celsius
  • 2030 target compatibility at 2 degrees Celsius

Such indicators are further complemented by other two indicators that measure the performance of a country regarding the Country’s national policy framework on climate issues along with the implementation. Apart from this, it also measures climate diplomacy in the category of climate policy. The CCPI collects its information from multiple think tanks, non-governmental organizations, and universities of the evaluated countries. These were key aspects of the Climate Change Performance Index.

Conclusion

With the help of the above findings and information, we can conclude that climate change is one persistent issue that countries need to think more of. The answer to this query of what is The Climate Change Performance Index and how we can control such change is answered with the help of previous reports. With the results of the previous Climate change performance Index, we can say that countries are now taking cognizant of the issue at hand and doing their bit for the climate change of the world.
