Calcium Phosphates

This given topic of calcium phosphate is one of the crucial salts that we come across in our everyday lives. The following article talks about the same salt. Follow the article to know What the Calcium phosphate is? What are the basic uses of this salt? What are the major properties that this salt carries with it?

In the field of chemistry, there are many different compounds, which are in many different forms, and one of the names of compounds is called calcium phosphate. Calcium phosphate is known as it is a salt of calcium or phosphoric acid. The chemical formula of calcium phosphate is Ca3(PO4)2. Follow the article to learn more about the salt Calcium Phosphate.

Producing Calcium Phosphates

In chemistry, we have multiple salts one of which is calcium phosphates, which is also named tricalcium phosphate or calcium phosphate tribasic. It is produced by the reaction of H3PO4 (phosphoric acid) to Ca (OH)2 (solid calcium hydroxide).

3Ca (OH)2 +2H3PO4 🡪Ca3(PO4)2+6H2O

The monobasic phosphate of calcium can be obtained by the excessive addition of the phosphoric acid to the tribasic calcium phosphate or the dibasic calcium phosphate solution that lets it evaporate. There is a rock that is complex and it is the impure form of the salt calcium phosphate and later on, produces the tribasic calcium phosphate.

We already know that calcium is found in foods naturally, and the human body needs to function properly, mainly in the bones. Calcium phosphate helps in the same way as it can help in the prevention and also in the treatment of calcium deficiencies.

Calcium phosphate is also water-soluble as it is found commonly in the skeletons of vertebrate animals. Salt is also very useful in the growth of plants as it is dispersed in the soil. It is not soluble in water, but it can easily dissolve in various acids. This salt can dissolve in the water that contains CO2; it can also be used in the process of natural farming.

Given below are some physical properties and chemical properties of the salt calcium phosphate.

Properties (Chemical and Physical)

The physical Properties of Ammonium Phosphate are given below:

  • The salt is also found in the bones, teeth, milk, and the ground.

  • The salt appears white, and it is in crystalline form.

  •  This white amorphous powder salt is tasteless and odorless.

  • The salt is insoluble in the acetic acid although, can also dissolve in hydrochloric acid and dilute nitric acid.

The Chemical Properties of Ammonium Phosphate are given below:

  • The phosphate of calcium with the reaction water gives phosphate and calcium hydroxide. The reaction is:

Ca3P2 +6H2O🡪 2PH3 + 3Ca (OH)2

  • The melting point of the tribalism calcium phosphate is 1670°.

  • The molecular weight of the salt varies between 136.06 to 310.20 g/ mol

Uses and Precautions

Some uses of Ammonium Phosphate have been mentioned below:

  • The salt (Calcium Phosphate) can be used as a dietary supplement in veterinary medicine and as an antacid.

  • It is also used in medicine as a Calcium replenisher.

  • It can be used as a plastic stabilizer, manufacturing milk glasses, and producing fertilizer.

  • This salt can be used in dental powers and the clarification of sugar syrups.

There are some precautions one must follow around this salt:

  1. The consumption of this salt can lead to chemical pneumonitis.
  2. The particles of calcium phosphate if it reaches the bloodstream, there will not be any harmful effects caused by it.

Conclusion

As it has been mentioned above, calcium phosphate is the salt of monobasic phosphate of calcium which is obtained from the excessive addition of phosphoric acid in the tribasic calcium phosphate solution. It has multiple uses such as being used as a dietary supplement in veterinary medicine, as an antacid, used in medicine as a Calcium replenisher. It also has use in the plastic stabilizer, manufacturing milk glasses, and production of fertilizers.
