Biological Uses of Zeolites

Any of a group of hydrated aluminosilicate minerals containing alkali and alkaline-earth metals known as zeolite. Zeolites are known for their ion-exchange capabilities and reversible dehydration or adsorption which is a primarily used principle to make oxygen concentrators serving for biological use.

Introduction:

Since the discovery of zeolites till now, there has been a steady increase in interest in scientific research and the application of this wonderful, interesting, and valuable substance.

Zeolites are minerals that are primarily composed of aluminum and silicon compounds. They are used as drying agents, detergents, as well as water and air purifiers. Zeolites are also sold as dietary supplements to treat cancer, diarrhea, autism, herpes, and hangovers, as well as to balance pH and remove heavy metals from the body. However, there is no published human data to back up these claims. In addition, the FDA has issued several warning letters to distributors for making false claims about zeolite products.

Zeolites:

Properties of zeolites:

Thermal expansion, uniformity of composition, hardness, optical properties, dielectric properties, electrical conductivity, zeolitic water, pore-volume, the structure of external and internal tetrahedral linkages, and framework density are all chemical and physical properties of these minerals. Zeolite properties are defined by their dimension, shape, high purity, and the linkage of their pores and voids. Zeolites have three main properties that are useful in agriculture: high water-holding capacity in both soil and pots, high cation-exchange capacity, and high adsorption capacity.

Healthcare uses:

The biological uses of zeolite mean its use in the healthcare and medical industry to benefit us. Some of which are listed below:

• The cavities of zeolites are negatively charged compounds that attract and capture (for elimination) toxins and other harmful substances such as free radicals. Toxin elimination allows the body’s cells to remain functional and repair themselves when they are damaged.

• Zeolites’ constituents have a high affinity for trapping these heavy dangerous metals, resulting in a dramatic reduction in the risk of certain cancers and heart disease—the two leading causes of death.

• The FDA has determined that zeolites are completely safe and non-toxic. There are no positively charged fibrous particulates in this mineral, which has a rough edge. Certain healthy physiological responses can be elicited by zeolites without causing any harm.

• The zeolite cage system can exchange for various excess ions found in the zeolites’ immediate surroundings. The overall effect would be to buffer the surrounding system and regulate pH to near-physiological levels.

• Free radicals, or unpaired electron atoms and molecules, attack cell membranes and, once inside, attack DNA. Normally, antioxidants check or destroy these, but as we age or antigens increase, the antioxidant network can’t keep up, and cells mutate, causing cancer and tumor formation. Zeolites function as a component of the antioxidant network, taking on some of the work and breaking the oxidative damage chain reaction.

• These bio-active constituents that act as enzymes, factors, co-factors, catalysts, and agents are required by the body’s amazing metabolic and digestive processes. Zeolite is used by the body in a variety of ways, depending on the needs of the body.

Principle of using zeolite in Oxygen generation:

Zeolites are used to absorb a wide range of substances. This comprises drying, purification, and separation applications. They can extract the water to extremely low partial pressures and are particularly effective desiccants, capable of holding up to 25% of their weight in water. They can separate isomers and combinations of gases, as well as remove volatile organic compounds from air streams. The ability of zeolites to separate gases is an extensively used attribute. Zeolites’ porous structure can be utilized to “sieve” molecules of a given size and allow them to enter the pores. This feature can be fine-tuned by adjusting the size and amount of cations surrounding the pores in the structure.

Oxygen concentrator:

An oxygen concentrator’s heart is made up of zeolites. The porous zeolite adsorbs enormous amounts of nitrogen under high pressure. Functionally, this sort of adsorption system is a nitrogen scrubber. Following the collection of oxygen and other free components, the pressure lowers, allowing nitrogen to desorb. Because of their capacity to distinguish between different gases, zeolites are commonly utilized in PSA systems. Their porosity also has an impact on the adsorption process. Some molecules can be selectively taken up due to the regular array of apertures and cavities (microporosity).

Conclusion:

Thus, zeolite’s biological uses are a blessing in disguise for human health to get fit or recover from certain diseases like cancer, diarrhea, autism, and herpes. Although, there might be some incorrect facts about zeolite consumption which can result in serious side effects. Therefore, use zeolite wisely and enjoy the benefits it provides.
