The Concept of Upanishad Thought

The Upanishads are Vedic texts written in Sanskrit. These are the newest part of the Vedas and one of the oldest scripture in the world.

The Upanishads provide the readers with earlier techniques provided in Hinduism in order to understand meditation, philosophy , consciousness and ontological knowledge. These techniques are there in the Upanishads written in the form of mantras, rituals, sacrifices etc.

Thoughts Of The Upanishads

The real thought passed on by the Upanishads is somehow questionable because these texts are considered to be the liturgical manual for conducting various Hindu rituals for the Brahmanas but the writings pass on a view seemingly opposing the ritual. The older variants of the Upanishads have been seen to attack the ritual and its intensity. Here are some of the thoughts passed on by the Upanishads regarding different rituals :-

  • Brihadaranyaka Upanishads – This Upanishad mentioned in it that a person who seeks to worship any other divine being other than themselves can be termed as domestic animals of gods .
  • Kaushitaki Upanishad – Here importance of rituals such as Agnihotram bring about the internal introspection was brought forward and it also claimed that one should aim to gain the knowledge and not the rituals itself.
  • Chandogya Upanishad – This version of the Upanishads contained parodies for various acts of sacrifices carried on by the people .
  • Mundala Upanishad – This lays light on the dark side of the rituals. This states processes through which people get called upon after being promised certain things for misleading them towards a sacrifice or ritual. This points out the uselessness of certain rituals in a man’s life and increases the knowledge of children and people regarding the frauds conducted using the name of rituals.
  • Maitri Upanishads – It discusses the end of knowledge of a Brahmana  after a sacrifice and gaining knowledge through meditation.

The Thought And Concept Of Brahman And Atman

The Upanishads bring forward two concepts of life namely Brahman and Atman .

Brahman

It is referred to as the source of infinite fabric, core and destiny of human existence. It is a pervasive infinite and eternal truth which remains the same but changes everything around it. It can also be called the creative principle of Hinduism throughout the world

Atman

Atman is the realisation of a person’s real self and immortal soul. The Upanishads have made Atman their central theme of knowing your own thematic focus in life . It discusses how not to confuse similar topics like Atman and Brahman and believe in the focus set in life.

Concept Of Reality And Maya

People often fail to realise the difference between reality and virtual reality of Maya.

Reality – In reality people see changes in reality, principles etc. In reality the Atman and its knowledge is referred to as vidya. This reality is understood through human experience and daily interplay between the ever-changing aspects known as Prakrti and the unchanging basics of life known as Parusha.

Maya – It is often regarded as untrue knowledge. Maya is also an illusion because it is a creation of human imagination and is based on people perceiving things in their own way possible and creating their own alternate reality. Maya is also an obscure knowledge which leads to people getting distracted.

The main thought process behind the Upanishads has a wide variety as it has one more than one idea. Some of the ideas portrayed in the Upanishads are :-

  • Ahimsa – This idea means non-violence. This is mainly an ethic of human life ,which certain people follow and some should follow.
  • Damah – This idea means to be self-restraint and holding on to one’s temperament.
  • Satya – Satya is an universal truth and it preaches truthfulness.
  • Dana – Dana refers to giving away whatever possible for an individual in the form of charity.
  • Daya – It means to show compassion for something or someone who is down for the moment.
  • Arjava – It preaches people to accept a non-hypocritical approach towards life Etc.

Conclusion

The Upanishads are part of one the oldest scriptures of the world and they have rich informative learning methods for the real life learning process. They also portray some unique thoughts regarding the rituals mentioned in them. These scriptures are very interesting and confusing at the same time.
