What is Ramsar Convention?

The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands is an intergovernmental treaty which provides the framework for international cooperation and national action for the conservation and the wise use of wetlands and their resources by the member nations. It was signed in a city of Iran called Ramsar in 1971 and also known as the Convention on Wetlands.The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands is an intergovernmental treaty signed in 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar, hence the name of the Convention. The treaty defines wetlands and establishes a framework for national and international action to conserve and sustainably use wetland resources.

In the country’s 75th year of independence, India adds 11 additional wetland sites to its list of Ramsar sites, bringing the total to 75 sites spanning a total area of 13,26,677 hectares.Within this year alone (2022), 28 sites have been designated as Ramsar sites. Based on the designation date shown on the Ramsar Certificate, the number is 19 for this year (2022) and 14 for the year before (2021).As of Aug 2022, The state of Tamil Nadu has the most Ramsar sites in India (14), followed by the state of Uttar Pradesh with 10 sites.Goa, Karnataka and Mizoram got there First Ramsar Sites, this year.Addition of new sites takes India’s total number of Ramsar Sites to 75, the most of any South Asian country.
