The All India Service's Indian Police Service does not provide protection, instead enables officers to hold higher-level posts in state police organisations and the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF).

IPS Salary

The starting monthly wage for an IPS officer is 56,100 rupees (without travel, dearness, and housing allowances), and it can reach 2,25,000 rupees.

  • An Indian Police Service (IPS) officer’s starting pay is 56,000 rupees, and as they advance in ranks and become more senior, their pay can reach a maximum of 2,25,000 rupees. 
  • The monthly remuneration for an IPS officer is 64,000, of which the officer receives around 54,000 as in-hand compensation each month. 
  • The Civil Services pay grades system has been eliminated in the new pay structure, and its place has been substituted by a new pay structure that combines pay levels.

IPS Salary as per the 7th Pay Commission

According to the 7th pay commission, the overall IPS compensation during the training phase at the 10th pay matrix level is around Rs. 55,000 or more. Following the UPSC’s suggestions, the IPS training commences. The day of the appointment marks the start of the IPS salary.  The IPS is placed on the Junior Scale (Pay Level 10) at the appointment time. The Pay-Band-3: Rs. 15,600 – 39,100 plus Grade Pay of INR 5,400 will be used. According to the matrix created by the seventh pay commission, the salary will be INR 56,100. After being assigned to the state cadre, this remuneration differs by state.

IPS Salary Perks

  1. House Rent Allowance (HRA): Rent-free housing with low prices. Typically a bungalow with a king bed and all the amenities.
  2. Dearness Allowance: A portion of the payment that is adjusted every six months (in January and July of each year) based on the inflation index is called the Dearness Allowance (DA) (CPI). 
  3. Office vehicles: Each IAS official will receive one to three cars and a driver or chauffeur.
  4. Security: Three house guards and two bodyguards provide protection. They are free to construct their security cover however they see fit.
  5. Electricity Bills: They are either totally free or significantly subsidised for their official housing.
  6. Phone Bills: Three BSNL SIM cards and a landline for home with free talk time, SMS, and internet are given to officers. 
  7. Travel Allowances: For official and casual trips to several states, IPS officers receive discounted lodging at circuit homes, government bungalows, or rest houses. 
  8. Household Staff: IPS officers also receive private housekeepers to handle the daily tasks at their official residence or service quarter.
  9. Study leave: After nine years of service, officers are also eligible to take a 2-4 year study break and are also permitted to study abroad.
  10. Unofficial Benefits: IAS officers are also given complimentary tickets and enter credentials to all crucial events in the district or zone under their control, including parties, concerts, cricket games, and other activities.
  11. Benefits after Retirement: IAS officers are eligible for a lifelong pension and other benefits. In case of sudden death, the same benefits are passed on to their wives. Other benefits include Encashment of Leaves, CGHS Medical Facility and Gratuity.

Difference between IPS Salary and IAS Salary

IPS and IAS officers start with a salary of 56,100 rupees, but an IPS officer’s maximum pay is only 22,500, while an IAS’s top pay is 25,000. Because of the tasks and responsibilities, an IPS officer’s remuneration is marginally lower than an IAS officer’s when examined at the highest level. An IAS has numerous, extensive, and varied tasks.
