Introduction

Railway protection force (RPF) is an “armed force of the union” that functions under the authority of the ministry of railways. It is tasked with the responsibility of protection and security of railway property areas and passengers. It is the only armed force of the union which has the power to arrest, investigate and prosecute criminals.

Role of RPF 

  • Protect and safeguard properties of railways, railway passengers and passenger areas. 
  • Ensuring the safety and security of trains in order to boost the confidence of passengers by removing all anti-social elements from trains. 
  • To remove any barrier in the movement of railway property or passenger area. 
  • Coordinate security-related activities among various agencies involved. 
  • Remain vigilant so as to prevent trafficking in women and children. 
  • Recently railways have renamed railway protection force as the Indian railway protection force.
