Open Jail Sanganer, Jaipur:

  • It is an open prison in Jaipur which has no bars or walls, no security guards at the entrance, and prisoners are permitted – even encouraged – to move out into the city and work every day. 
  • It is a trust-based approach constructed on the principle of self-governance and self-discipline, which is rehabilitative in nature. 
  • A study suggested that open prisons proved around 78 times cheaper than closed prisons in the country. Whereas the cost per prisoner in the central prison of Jaipur was close to Rs 7,094/ month, and on the other hand, the cost at open jail (Sanganer) was just around Rs 500/month. 
  • According to Prison Statistics of India 2015, the state of Rajasthan and Maharashtra had 42 open prisons (more than half of the total open Prisons). Fifteen other states have twenty-one open prisons.
