What is IAS Exam?
One of India’s most demanding competitive tests is the Civil Services Examination, also known as the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), originally known as the Imperial Civil Service (ICS). The Union Public Service Commission manages the recruitment process of All India Administrative Civil Service officers. The Union Public Service Commission, the primary hiring organisation, administers the Civil Services Examination (CSE), also known as the IAS exam, annually (UPSC).
IAS Exam Pattern
The IAS Exam pattern is:
1. Stage I: Preliminary Examination (IAS Prelims)
There are two papers in the IAS Prelims exam: General Studies I and CSAT (General Studies Paper II). While CSAT is a qualifying exam, your choice for UPSC Mains is determined by your performance on the General Studies test.
2. Stage II: Mains Examination (IAS Mains)
There are two different sorts of papers in the IAS Mains Exam: qualifying and merit-ranking. The Language paper (Paper A) and the English paper (Paper B), qualifying in nature, are the two papers.
3. Stage III: UPSC Personality Test (IAS Interview)
Candidates who pass all rounds are advised to enter the Indian civil service. You must qualify for each round to participate in the following one because they are all elimination rounds. Let’s now talk about the UPSC Exam Pattern 2022 and the scoring system for each exam in each round.
IAS Exam – Interview
The final and most crucial step in the UPSC Exam Pattern selection process is the interview. The interview is worth 275 points, for a total possible score of 2025. The following are some of the attributes the panel looks for in a candidate:

IAS Exam Eligibility Criteria
1. Nationality:
An applicant must be an Indian citizen to be considered for the Indian Administrative Service, Indian Foreign Service, or Indian Police Service, the applicant must be an Indian national, and the candidate must be a citizen of Bhutan or Nepal, To be permanently settled in India, the applicant must be a Tibetan Refugee who arrived in India before January 1, 1962, the applicant must be an individual of Indian descent who migrated to India to reside there permanently from one of the following countries: Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Myanmar, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Uganda, Vietnam, Zaire, or Zambia.
2. Educational Qualification:
The applicant must possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Candidates who have taken the qualifying exam but have not yet received their results or those who have not yet taken the qualifying exam are also eligible to take the preliminary exam, along with their application for the Main Examination. Such candidates must provide documentation that they passed the relevant test. Candidates having technical and professional credentials accepted by the government or those with an equivalent are also eligible to apply. Candidates who have passed any medical examination or the final year of MBBS but have not yet finished their internship are also eligible to sit for the Main Examination. However, they must provide proof that they passed the last professional medical examination in the form of a certificate from the relevant university.
3. Age Limit:
As of August 1, 2022, a candidate must be at least 21 years old and no older than 32. However, he or she must have been born between August 2, 1990, and August 2, 2001. The necessary steps will be taken to make the necessary adjustments to the relevant Rules and Regulations relating to the various services. The following candidates are eligible for a relaxation of the aforementioned maximum age limit:
- 5 Years – Scheduled Caste/ Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST)
- 3 Years – Other Backward Classes (OBC)
- 3 Years – Personnel in the Defense Services
- 5 Years – As of August 1, 2022, Ex-Servicemen, including Commissioned Officers and ECOs/SSCOs
- Who have completed at least 5 Years of Military Service, in the case of ECOs/SSCOs,
- 10 Years –Â Blind, deaf, mute, and orthopedically challenged people
- 5 Years – In the case of ECOs/SSCOs who have completed an initial period of assignment of five years of Military Service as of August 1, 2022, whose assignment has been extended beyond five years, and in whose case, the Ministry of Defence issues a certificate that they can apply for civil employment and that they will be released on the selection with three months’ notice from the date of receiving the offer of appointment.
4. Number of Attempts:
- Since 1984, the maximum number of attempts has been limited: 6 tries for general candidates (Up to 32 Years)
- Candidates from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST): No Restrictions (Up to 37 Years)
- 9 attempts for Other Backward Classes (OBC) (Up to 35 Years)
- Those who are physically unable to work: 9 attempts for general and OBC, unlimited for SC/ST
IAS Exam – Roles And Responsibilities
IAS officials have a prestigious position that demands a lot of responsibility and respect. A police officer must also be in excellent physical and mental condition to resist caving under work pressure. An IAS officer is delegated the following functions and responsibilities:
- Handling governmental concerns involving the formulation and application of policy in conjunction with the relevant Minister
- Implementing policies under observation and visiting the locations where the adopted policies will be put into practice
- Implementing policies includes allocating monies under personal control
- Accountable to the State Legislatures and the Parliament for any rules broken while on the job.
- At several career stages, duties and responsibilities change.
- IAS officials initially join the state government at the sub-divisional level, continuing their services as sub-divisional magistrates, and managing law and order, general administration, and development work in the area allotted to them.
- The IAS officers hold the prestigious and accountable position of the district officer, also known as district magistrate, district collector, or deputy commissioner.
- An IAS officer manages district issues at the district level, including the rollout of educational initiatives.
- The officials may also be assigned to positions in public sector organisations, the State Secretariat, or department heads.
- They might have various jobs at the State, the Center, or both. Deputation is used in this situation.
- IAS personnel at the Centre are crucial in designing and executing policies about a specific field, such as finance, commerce, etc.
- IAS officers operating at different levels, such as joint and deputy secretaries, provide their vital inputs while formulating policies and making decisions.
- Depending on the problem’s seriousness, either the minister in question or the cabinet decides to define the policy.
IAS Exam – How to Apply

- On the homepage, select UPSC IAS Application Form.
- The application form is going to be shown.
- Fill out the required information in the blanks to register now.
- A registration ID and password will then be emailed to the phone number and email addresses you provided.
- Use the registration ID and password to log in now.
- Add all the validated information to the remaining fields of the form.
- Upload the scanned documents requested in the application form after completing it.

In the UPSC CSE notice 2022, 816 UPSC Civil Services 2022 openings for various positions such as IAS, IFS, IPS, IRS, etc., were notified. A total of 712 positions were made available for the UPSC IAS recruitment 2022.
