- The Good Governance Index (GGI) is a unique tool which is used by all the states to assess the Status of Governance. It uniformly assesses the initiatives taken by the State Governments and Union Territories.
- The Index’s objectives are to provide quantifiable data to compare the state of governance in all States Governments and Union Territories, enabling states and Union Territories to formulate and thus implement appropriate strategies for improving governance and shift to result oriented administration Governance.
- The Good Governance Index is calculated with the help of following ten sectors:

⇒ Commerce & Industries,
⇒ Human Resource Development,
⇒ Public Health,
⇒ Public Infrastructure & Utilities,
⇒ Economic Governance,
⇒ Social Welfare & Development,
⇒ Judicial & Public Security,
⇒ Environment and
⇒ Citizen-Centric Governance.
- According to data provided by the central Ministry of Personnel, Tamil Nadu, followed by Maharashtra and Karnataka, bagged the top position in the Good Governance Index (GGI).
- States/Union Territories are divided into three groups for rankings: big states, northeast and hill states, and Union Territories.
- In the North-East and hill category, the state of Himachal Pradesh has topped the ranking. In Union Territories, Puducherry has got the first position.
- GGI also gave sector-wise rankings.
- Under the agriculture sector, Madhya Pradesh has got the first position in the big states. Mizoram has bagged the first position in North-East, and hill states category and the Union Territory of Daman and Diu has bagged the top slot in the UT category.
- In the commerce and industries sector, Jharkhand got the first position in the big states category. Uttarakhand achieved the top rank among the north-east and hill states, whereas Delhi is at the first rank in the union territories.
Worldwide Governance Indicators:
- Over 200 countries and territories are covered by the Worldwide Governance Indicators (WGI) project, which provides aggregate and individual governance indicators for six different dimensions of governance from 1996 to 2020.
