Road, Rail, Air-Traffic Accidents

Road networks are developed for improved connectivity and service. Some of the leading

causes of accidents on the road include too many cars, violations of traffic rules, speeding,

drunken driving and poor maintenance of vehicles and roads.

The most trivial type of rail accident is derailment due to human error, sabotage or a

natural landslide on a hilly track or fire. Rail accidents lead to a large number of casualties

and material damage. Such accidents cost the Indian Railways a lot of money every year.

Air accidents take place due to technical problems, fire, poor landing and take-off, weather conditions, hijacking, bombing, etc.

Effects: When these types of accidents take place, the damage is not limited to the people injured or killed.

• Many such accidents result in environmental contamination of the surrounding area, requiring extensive remediation and clean-up.
• Individuals and organisations may experience significant property damage and financial loss as a result of these accidents.
• People may even be injured or become ill as a result of toxic substances released into the environment by such accidents.

According to government statistics, there were 3,74,397 unintentional deaths in India in 2020, with vehicle crashes accounting for more than 35% of these deaths. However, according to the National Crime Records Bureau’s (NCRB) annual report, there were fewer accidental  deaths in 2020 than there were in 2019, when the total was 4,21,104.
