- The Disaster Management Division is an attached office under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
- Furthermore, the Disaster Management Division works with state governments, line ministries, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), and the Directorate General of Fire Services, Home Guards and Civil Defence, as well as the Armed Forces, to reduce disaster risks for the Indian government.
- The Division of Disaster Management is responsible for legislative and policy issues, capacity building, mitigation and response, as well as long-term rehabilitation. The major responsibilities of the Disaster Management Division are as follows:
- Organise and mobilise resources to deal with natural disasters other than drought, hail storms, cold and frost waves, and pest attacks.
- Monitoring and reporting the situation from the control room.
- Early Warning Systems for Multi-Hazard Situations.
- Issues pertaining to the State Disaster Response Fund and the National Disaster Response Fund.
- Preparedness, mitigation, response, prevention and capacity building are the matters related to disaster response.
- Cooperation between international disaster management organisations.
- Reconstruction after disasters and long-term rehabilitation.
- All the administrative and budgeting matters pertaining to NDMA, NDRF, and NIDM.
- Reinforcement of emergency and fire services.
- It encompasses all matters related to the Fire Services, Civil Defence, and Home Guards, including the Director- General of (Fire Services, Civil Defence, and Home Guards), the National Civil Defence College (NCDC), and the National Fire Services College (NFSC).
- Administrating the Disaster Management Act, 2005.
