About Tungabhadra Dam: Also known as Pampa Sagar Dam.

  • 1953: Constructed by Dr. Thirumale Iyengar, a multifunctional dam on river Tungabhadra.
  • Significance: It is lifeline for the drought-prone districts of Bellary, Koppal, and Raichur in Karnataka (Known as the rice bowl of Karnataka), and Anantapur, Cuddapah, and Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh.

About Tungabhadra River:

  • A sacred river in southern India, flowing from Karnataka to Andhra Pradesh, formerly known as Pampa.
  • It is formed by the confluence of the Tunga and Bhadra rivers (Both originate on the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats).
  • Major Tributaries: Bhadra, Haridra, Vedavati, Tunga, Vadra, and Kumdavathi.
  • It flows northwest before joining the Krishna River, which then empties into the Bay of Bengal.
