- 2023–24: 24.80 crore.
- Fall of 11.13 lakh students (0.5%) compared to 2023–24.
- Government schools: Decline from 13.62 crore (2022–23) → 12.16 crore (2024–25).
- Private schools: Rise from 8.42 crore (2022–23) → 9.59 crore (2024–25).
- Private schools now form 39% of total enrolment, highest since 2018–19 (earlier 33–37%).
- Government schools: Declined to 10.13 lakh (2024–25) from 10.18 lakh (2023–24).
- Private schools: Increased to 3.79 lakh (2024–25) from 3.31 lakh (2023–24).
- Decline: Primary level (Classes 1–5).
- Rise: Pre-primary, upper primary (6–8), secondary (9–10), higher secondary (11–12).
- Boys: Declined to 12.76 crore (2024–25) from 12.87 crore (2023–24).
- Girls: Slight rise to 11.93 crore (2024–25) from 11.93 crore (2023–24).
- Secondary level dropout reduced: 13.8% (2022–23) → 8.2% (2024–25).
- Foundational stage (Pre-primary–Class 2): Stable (41.4% in 2024–25 vs 41.5% in 2023–24).
- Preparatory stage (Classes 3–5): Fall (95.4% in 2024–25 vs 96.5% in 2023–24).
- Middle & Secondary (Classes 6–12): Improved compared to 2023–24.
Reasons Behind Decline
- Change in methodology since 2022–23: Individual student records instead of aggregate data → removal of duplicates.
- Demographic shifts: Falling birth rates.
Why in News?
- The UDISE+ 2024–25 data shows school enrolment has declined for the third straight year, driven by a drop in government school enrolments, even as private schools gained record share.
