About Machilipatnam Port:
- Location: Situated at the mouth of the Krishna River, on the Bay of Bengal, in Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh.
- Historical Names: Known as Masulipatnam, Bandar, or Masalia in different historical periods.
Historical Significance:
- Ancient Trade Centre: Mentioned as Maisolos by Ptolemy (2nd century CE) and as Masalia in the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea (1st century CE).
- Â Traded with Rome, Persia, China, and Southeast Asia during the Satavahana period (3rd century BCE onwards).
- Medieval Era: Flourished under the Qutb Shahi dynasty (16th–17th centuries) as the main port of the Golkonda Kingdom.
- European Era: One of the first East India Company factories was set up here in the early 17th century.
Why in News?
- The historic Machilipatnam Port in Andhra Pradesh is being revived with the construction of a modern Greenfield port at Manginapudi, restoring its ancient maritime legacy.
