Repairability Index (RI) Framework for Mobile & Electronics Sector:
-
The RI is a scoring system that measures how easily a product, like a smartphone or tablet, can be repaired, empowering consumers to make informed choices and promoting mindful product use.
-
The committee recommended that Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) should self-declare the Repairability Index based on a standardized scoring system, without adding compliance burdens.
-
The RI should be displayed at the point of sale, on e-commerce platforms, and via QR codes on product packaging to ensure visibility and transparency.
-
In its initial phase, the framework covers smartphones and tablets, focusing on priority parts like batteries, display assemblies, cameras, charging ports, and speakers.
-
Repairability is assessed based on six core parameters:
-
Disassembly Depth
-
Availability of Repair Information
-
Availability of Spare Parts
-
Software Updates
-
Availability of Tools
-
Fasteners (types and ease of availability)
-
-
Each parameter is scored, weightages assigned, and an overall RI score is derived on a five-point numeric scale.
-
It complements India’s Right to Repair Portal, aiming to improve repair accessibility, transparency, and sustainable consumption in the electronics market.
Why in News?
-
