About RAW chief appointment

  • The R&AW Chief (Secretary, Research & Analysis Wing) is appointed by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).
  • ACC is chaired by the Prime Minister, with the Home Minister as the other key member.
  • R&AW is not established by an Act of Parliament.
  • It was created in 1968 through an Executive Order of the Government of India.
  • The RAW Chief holds the post of Secretary in the Cabinet Secretariat.
  • Tenure: fixed tenure of (commonly 2 years), which may be extended by the ACC.
