Established: 1952 (as part of three-tier peacetime gallantry award series)
Awarded for:
Acts of conspicuous gallantry away from the battlefield
Includes actions during counter-insurgency, anti-terror operations, and rescue missions
Eligibility: Armed Forces, Police, CAPFs, civilians.
Equivalent to: Maha Vir Chakra (wartime).
2. Shaurya Chakra
Third-highest peacetime gallantry award.
Awarded for:
Valour, courageous action or self-sacrifice not in direct action with the enemy.
Frequently awarded in counter-terrorism, internal security, and rescue operations.
Eligibility: All ranks of the military, police forces, and civilians.
Equivalent to: Vir Chakra (wartime).
