About Mount Erebus:
- Location: Antarctica’s southernmost active volcano, situated on Ross Island at 12,448 feet above sea level.
- Nomenclature: Named after Erebus, the Greek god of darkness, by British explorer Sir James Clark Ross in 1841.
- Ranking: 2nd tallest volcano in Antarctica, after Mount Sidley.
- Type: Glaciated intraplate stratovolcano, part of the Pacific Ring of Fire.
- Lava Lake: Contains a continuously active lava lake since at least 1972, emitting gases and steam.
- Eruptions: Produces Strombolian eruptions, ejecting magma and pyroclastic rocks. Also has an inactive side crater.
Gold Emission
- Emits gold micro-crystals (as small as 20 micrometers) through volcanic gas. These particles have been detected over 600 miles away.
Why in News?
- Scientists discovered that Mount Erebus is the only known volcano to release metallic gold in solid form.
