About Mascho Piro Tribe:
- Nomadic hunter-gatherers, who live in the Amazon jungles of Madre de Dios, near Peru’s borders with Brazil and Bolivia.
- They are among the largest uncontacted tribes, with an estimated population of approximately 750 people.
- Peru’s government has banned contact with the Mashco Piro to prevent the spread of diseases among the population to which they have no immunity.
- The tribe is highly reclusive, with most information about them coming from the neighboring Yine people.
Why in News?
- Survival International, an NGO promoting indigenous rights, has made public some extremely rare images of the Mashco Piro tribe in southeast Peru.
