About Kannadippaya:
- Kannadippaya (literally meaning “mirror mat“) is a traditional tribal handicraft made from the soft inner layers of reed bamboo.
- It is known for its reflective patterns, the mat offers both warmth in winter and a cooling effect in summer.
- It has been awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, becoming the first tribal handicraft product from Kerala to receive this recognition.
- Crafted by tribal communities: Oorali, Mannan, Muthuva, Malayan, Kadar, etc, in districts like Idukki, Thrissur, Ernakulam, and Palakkad.
- Made primarily from Teinostachyum wightii (locally known as Njoonjileetta, Nj oojoora, etc.) and other Ochlandra bamboo species.
- Historically, these mats were offered to kings by tribal communities as a symbol of honour and respect.
Why in News?
- On April 4, 2025, Kannadippaya was officially granted the GI tag.
