About the Committee:
- 2017: A three-member committee, chaired by Retired High Court Justice K. Hema, was formed in response to the abduction and sexual assault of a leading female actor.
- 2024: The report finally released by the Kerala government.
Findings of the Report:
- Sexual Harassment and Gender Discrimination: Widespread sexual harassment, significant pay disparities, and reluctance to allow women in technical roles.
- Workplace Misconduct: Prevalence of drug and alcohol abuse, leading to gross indiscipline and demeaning comments toward women.
- Lack of Support: Absence of legal awareness and no established authority to address grievances.
Recommendations:
- Establishment of Tribunals: Led by a retired district judge to address serious issues faced by women in the Malayalam film industry.
- New Legislation: To protect women and deter perpetrators in the film industry.
- Industry Reforms: including banning alcohol, and drugs, and preventing abuse of women on film sets.
